I just purchased a Compaq Presario F572US, with Vista, and a Linksys WRT54GS v7 Router. I set up a network and connected my Dell Dimension 4600 with XP.

Both computers have full access to the internet through the router but I have no luck setting up file sharing. I have asked for help from Microsoft and Linksys but have not been able to solve the problem. It doesn't help that Vista and XP appear to use different vocabularies.

What did you do to setup File Sharing? In detail, please.

Reminder, when setting folders to share you also have to modify permissions to allow full access.

I suspect Vista may have more stringent requirements than WinXP.

I've posted the question on Microsoft's Expert Help forum. Search "File Sharing between WinXP and Vista" to view any answers.

Let me explain what I am trying to do: My wife and I each use both computers. She does a lot of photo editing and would like to have only one set of files but have access from either machine. I want our file sharing to be as simple as possible, however, we would not want others to access our notebook files while we are traveling and using a wireless connection in a public place.

I have used the network setup wizards on both machines and have not been successful in setting up one machine to see what is on the other.

One other note: I see this error message on the XP machine wheb trying to set up file sharing: "An error occurred while trying to share Shared Documents. The Server service is not started. The shared resource was not created at this time."

Keep in mind that the router works fine for internet access from both machines.

Thanks,

Ranger
