Windows Media Player does not play the "Listen now" file on the right hand side of this web page. I am using Windows Media Player within Windows VISTA. I way to avoid downloading and installing Quick Time Player with itunes if I can, but if I can't get this working otherwise I will download and install the Apple stuff. Any ideas?

Did you ever get this sorted out, zap? Using Firefox, the site wants to install the QuickTime plugin (which I won't allow). In IE, an ActiveX control is used. I could hear it fine once the control was installed.

I tried opening and running the file and see no way to install/run Active X. I am still not able to run the file using Windows Vista and IE7.

I can play the sample mp3 file in the link listed below.

What is the significance of this message (unknown protocol)?

I got your PM, zap.

If I right-click on the 'Listen now' link and select Properties, I get the exact message box as yours.

When I clicked on the link yesterday, IE asked if I wanted to run the required ActiveX control. I allowed it and the new window (Javascript newWin) below opened. What are your security settings for IE? Are ActiveX controls allowed to run?
zap
In IE7, if I select Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > and remove the check mark from Enable Protected Mode (requires starting Internet Explorer), the link plays without a hitch. If I put the check mark back in the Enable Protected Mode box, the link wil not play.

Security Settings > Internet Zone:

ActiveX controls and plug-ins

Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without prompt | Disable
Allow Scriptlets | Disable
Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls | Disable
Binary and script behaviors | Enable
Display video and animation on a webpage that does not use external media player | Disable
Download signed ActiveX controls | Prompt (recommended)
Download unsigned ActiveX controls | Disable (recommended)
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for scripting | Disable (recommended)
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins | Enable
Scrip ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting* | Enable

I have XP with IE7 and the 'Enable Protected Mode' box is not there. Must be a Vista thing.

The only difference in my security settings is that unsigned controls are set to 'Prompt', not 'Disabled' You could try changing that temporarily to see if it helps.

At least we know it's a security setting problem, not a site one.

I changed the Active X control to prompt and this did not help. I have asked the web site author to see if a format other than MP could be used. Although I think Quick Time media player would work, I want to avoid installing Quick Time if possible. You have been very helpful in sorting this problem out. Thanks for your help HKED.

I avoid QuickTime like the plague as well, zap.

You're welcome for the help.

I found a solution to this problem. Within Internet Explorer I clicked on Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab > Trusted Sites > Sites . . . and added the web site to the list of trusted sites. HKED, thanks for the help and motivation. zap
