----------- Sounds good so far - went to find chips at other online stores.
----------- They all guaranteed the following: PC2100 or PC2700, none for PC3200.
Found the PC3200 that dell was suggesting, not guaranteed, at both CL 3 & CL 2.5.
Since Dell didn’t included that info in their specs for the chip on their site, I thought I’d
ask Dell’s Live Chat Tech what the CL was.
Without listing the whole conversation, which I’m sure some of you’d love to read, I
was told the chip that Dell wants me to buy for the upgrade is not compatible with my
system.
DELL - Scott, I apologize for any kind of inconvenience.
However I would like to tell you that this Memory module is not compatible
with your computer.
SCOTT- So the chip that Dell wants me to buy is wrong?
DELL – Scott, your system supports a Memory Module of PC 2100 with 266MHz speed.
whereas the Memory Module which is shown in the website as per the
Part number given is a PC 3200 with speed of 400MHz.
SCOTT- This is correct I've had the manual for this computer for a long time.
I've read what it has. So the chip that Dell wants me to buy is wrong?
DELL - Scott, I apologize for any kind of inconvenience, however let me go ahead
and provide you a Part Number and the Description of the memory which
will be best compatible with your computer:
Part Number (SKU): 1K696, Description: DIMM, 512MB, 266M, 64X64, 8K.
Silly thing is, when I entered the SKU # in their search it comes up unknown.
So….which should I buy the:
PC2100 @ 266MHz, the one the tech wants me to buy & virtually all online stores
PC2700 @ 333MHz, some online stores … like crutial.com
PC3200 @ 400MHz, only one offered at Dell’s Official Site, told not to buy from tech
Interceptor
Everything I read pointed to PC2100.

Yes, unfortunately, this is what I am hearing more from Dell now. Actually, Dell was wrong again; PC3200 would work just fine in your computer, but it would only run at 266 MHz, not the full 400. So in effect you would be wasting your money by purchasing the more expensive memory. May as well buy the cheaper memory. I suggest using Wes' utility to verify what you currently have, and purchase to match whatever memory you are currently running.
