I hope I have this in the correct forum but apologies if they are not.

1) Ccleaner has a tool for tidying up the registry - does it work or should I ignore it?

2) I have 4 Updates from microsoft which keep failing to install. All 4 relate to MS Office applications. I have reported the problem to microsoft and they reply to my initial e-mail but when I tell them their solutions have not worked I hear nothing else. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ref,

I had the problem fixed it but then went to 07. Regardless I googled and came up with:

And as for the Ccleaner question, I've heard it said that the Registry cleaner section of the program is not recommended. But that news is rather old and things may have changed - new versions of that program are appearing all the while. I have used it on my old Win98 box with no ill effects, though.

However, the program is very good for clearing temporary files down, and I use it myself.

CCleaner is a very good program. But registry cleaning is difficult and hazardous enough that my inclination is to use a specialty program devoted to that purpose alone. I say that knowing almost nothing about the registry cleaning abilities of CCleaner, tho I use CCleaner's other capabilities.

I have used CC regularly to clean including the register and not had any problems, unlike all other utilities that I have tried. I think CC does not do an in-depth register cleaning, just the "easy stuff".

I have been using a new tool I ran across on another forum called Advanced Window Care. I really like it and it will scan the registry and show you any errors and recommend what to do with them.

You might look at it. Maybe someone else has a comment on it.

PS: It is FREE.

I do not have may problems with my rig (knocking on wood) but I have not run into any of the things you see with some programs like this such as...we cannot fix, but for x$ here is something that will fix your problem....

Ref, what are the 4 updates (by MS number). Also, Office has a strong tendency to corrupt certain files within itself. I have found that if it is working fine, then leave it as-is. You may have to uninstall, clean up certain files (which you can by using CCleaner. It does work well for leftover files) and by removing the main Office folders in HKEY/User/Software and HKEY/LocalMachine/Software. Just go through the list in CCleaner/Issues and only check the boxes you see which pertain to Office after the official uninstall and regedit.

Thanks Chrisjea - I have been through most of these but still no joy.

Interceptor - The updates are KB925251, KB936048, KB934180 and KB920813. I have looked on the microsoft website but could find nothing.

To be honest, when I posted the two weren't connected but I can see how they might be.

Are you suggesting I:-
1) Backup the registry
2) uninstall office
3) tidy up the office bits of the registry using Ccleaner
4) reinstall office
5) try again to do the updates?

Hi

I foudn a link which suggested checking the Office Source Engine service was running (a process called ose.exe). It wasn't. I manually started it and tried again - all installed without a problem.

Now I just need to decide whether to trust the Ccleaner registry cleaner.
