Full Version: Ie And Outlook Express Can't Find Lan

Gateway desktop with XP home OS. IE 6.0.
Replaced non functioning network support (part of mainboard) with Linksys card. I disabled the on-board network in the config.
New card works fine; can ping www.yahoo.com etc. successfully and shows as connected with data moving both ways. (came up as "Local Area Connection 2") although it is the only LAN connection displayed.

Neither Explorer nor Outlook can connect via this network connection. Any suggestions gratefully accepted

Hi Herschel, welcome to SAF

Assuming you are not using dedicated dns servers, Start -> Control Panel, Network Connections. Rightclick on your default connection (Local Area Connection 2) and leftclick on Properties. Doubleclick on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Chris, and tnx.

I will try this on Monday afternoon and let you know if it works out.
Thanks again.

Hi Huck,

depending on your lan settings, this will not work... I have 5 systems hooked to a broadband modem via switch, so, my DNS address is the gateway one... and the gateway system has a dedicated DNS address.

If you have more than one computer networked, I'd suggest you to attrib static IP addresses to each ones. I used dynamic IPs once, and this always caused conflicts.

Let us know how it goes, as this may help other members in the future. smile.gif

Hi All,

So far have had no luck in restoring internet access to this machine.
Some additional information:
When I was removing the existing LAN "board" and was removing the driver for that system, Windows issued a message essentially refusing to remove the driver as it may render system unable to boot. Can that refusal to remove the driver be causing any mischief?
Boot from network is enabled, assume that to be reason for message.

Thanks again,
Herschel

Boot from network is enabled
Look in the bios and set things so you don't boot from the network. Set the Boot sequence to A: Drive, then CD, then hard drive. Take boot from network out of the picture. After the computer boots, tell us if there are problems with any hardware items in device manager.

This too was unsuccessful. After lengthy session with Gateway tech support, user opted for system restore; which took care of problem...
darn little boxes with check marks in them!

Thanks again for all the input.

Try running the Winsock Repair. It probably got wiped out from the driver uninstall.

Try Jim's suggestion and disable boot from network. It's not needed unless you really need to boot from a server.

If WinsockXPFix doesn't seems to work, take a look at this pinned topic and post a HijackThis log here: http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?showtopic=16053
Note: Remember to rename hijackthis.exe to anything.exe you feel comfortable with, as new baddies may detect hijackthis.exe and hide from it.

You may have baddies playing around. rolleyes.gif

Note that, if you can successfully ping servers, it's possible that something is wrong on your network (tcp/ip) configuration.
