Full Version: Ip Conflict

Everything was going smoothly. Then I get the error message; "there is an ip address conflict with another system on the network ..." . How do I find the conflicting computer, or is it either one of mine? MY linksys router is wireless, however my two desktops are connected via cable. I realize that the wireless connection is still out there, but the Encryption Key, provided by the router is like 26 characters long and would be so hard to figure out by anyone but a real hacker. I don't know if anyone with those skills lives close enough to hack that code and why would they?

Back to the question, how do I fix this? Anyone know anything about NetBEUI being more secure for small networks like mine?

Thanks and God bless.

You most likely do not need netbeui. If you are not using static IPs then shut down all computers on the network and then bring them up one at a time. The computers will find IPs and the conflict will go away.

Thanks. What do you mean by static PC's?

Hi Deacon

You can set your networked systems either to obtain dynamic ips or use different static ips on all the machines. In my home network, I use static ips to avoid conflicts with other systems. As you can see belov, my system is the number three on the network:

The gateway is the machine number one, which have two lan cards, one connected to the DSL modem and the other to the switch (I don't have a router).
Right-click the network connection, select properties, then TCP/IP protocol, properties.
