KEEPING YOU SAFE

Compromised Websites in Italy infect thousands worldwide

Threats to you and your computer from the Web – whether you’re sending e-mail, browsing, shopping, or banking – are on the rise. The month of June saw an accelerating infection rate from seemingly legitimate Web pages in Italy that were loaded with malware. More than 3,000 compromised Websites in Italy were designed to plant a keylogger that steals passwords or to use infected computers to launch other malicious attacks. Trend Micro data indicates that tens of thousands of users worldwide have accessed the compromised URLs, oblivious to the threat.

The mechanism for spreading the virus is a complex chain that relies on Website owners being unaware the sites are compromised, and on Website users being unaware that surfing through seemingly legitimate pages can actually be part of an infection process. Here’s how the infection occurs:

The compromised first-level URLs are legitimate Websites, but they have a malicious IP (Internet Protocol) address inserted or injected into their HTML code by hackers. The malicious address redirects users to another site, using a Javascript downloader.

The second level URL further directs the user to a third level, where a series of Trojan viruses are installed, including a keylogger that can steal user passwords and other information. If you are using security software that blocks downloaders, you would be protected from the second and third level URLs in this attack.
