Hi everybody,
It is that time again. The family reunion for Mama's side of the family is the 28th of this month and I would like to make some photos with my digital camera. Last year, I bought a 512 stick for the camera and some new rechargeable batteries and a charger. Last Christmas Eve, I made some pics of our party and have not made any more pics since. I am sure that my batteries need recharging by now. My question is: should I first download the pics that are on the memory stick to the computer and then remove and recharge the batteries or should I not? Need an answer within the next few days so that the batteries will have time to be fully charged. We are leaving (Mama, Little Bit, and me) next Thursday.

The pics on the stick will stay there, batteries or no batteries. The problem with leaving them on the stick is the reduced capacity to take more pics. After every event that I take pics at, I transfer all of the images into a folder on the hard drive, thus freeing up all available memory for the next batch. I remove the stick and plug it into a card reader on the computer for the transfer. In most cases, it's much faster than transferring from the camera with the USB cable.

Thanks jimholly for replying. Does anybody else have anything else to add?

Jim is right, I do the same.

The only thing that may be lost is the cam date and time stamp setup. Most cameras can retain this setup when you change the batteries, but not if you let them out for recharging. This is why I always have two sets of batteries to swap.

Thanks Chris,
I would not want to lose the date and time stamp on the pics so what I will do for now is to download them to my computer and pick up a second set of batteries.
Thanks everybody for replying. After I download the pics to the computer, I will try and post some of them.

Once the pictures were taken, the date/time stamp remains on them, no matter if you have batteries or not. It's the cam setup which may be lost, so you'll have to set date and time again before taking new pics.
Having a second set of batteries is handy when you have a lot of pics to take using the flash, not to be suddenly short of batteries.
Let us see your pics.

Jeannie my camera battery ( Canon SD450) needs only 90 min to recharge.
Did you look at your manual for the charging information?

Hi Webster,
I bought a charger that plugs into an electrical outlet and last year the batteries took a couple of days to charge if I remember correctly. The charger has a light on it that glows red when it is plugged into the outlet and the batteries are charging. Then when the batteries are charged, the light goes out. The batteries may have been charged before I noticed that the light was out; the outlet I used was in the bathroom.

Jeannie seveal days of charging might have damaged the batteries. I take it you have a charger for AA & AAA bateries. They usuallly take about 11-16 hours at the max. So do get another set of rechargable batteries. And Like the guys said if you have a card reader use that and not the USB cord which uses battery power to download.
Also it is wise to make a folder in My Pictures for recent downloaded pixs before sorting then into other folders with in My Pictures. This is the inside of My pictures Folder from My Documents. I need to get in there and sort it all out but it gives you the idea. The pixs on bottom right need to be deleted or placed in folders.

My camera doesn't run on an internal battery. The batteries I am referring to are AA and they are rechargeable. I bought a battery charger along with the AA rechargeable batteries. I read the manual on changing/inserting the batteries and also on inserting rechargeable batteries. I always read the instruction manual before I use anything new. Daddy taught David (my brother) and me to always do this.
Update: The instructions to the charger said to insert the batteries and plug the charger into an outlet and leave it plugged in until the red light went out. This is what I did.
Further update: Computer has quit again. I have consulted the tech at Office Depot. I asked him what I should do with this system. I said, "If this system were yours, what would you do with it?" He said that he would get a new power supply one more time and when it quit working, he would buy a new computer. These are the plans.

Jeannie, good advise read the instructions. I have 2 different chargers for AAA & AA (both) and the time was 11-16 hours on both set of instructions. I was just sharing and agreeing with advise already given to buy an extra battery.I did read your post. And did answer trying to help. I don't believe I mentioned intrernal battery. Sorry I should have kept it to myself.
How does the Lemon Law Work in Georgia? Normal is 3 times and then replacement for FREE.
I would call the Dept of Consumers Affairs. Gosh again I stick my nose in others affairs. Sorry. Sharing can be view 2 ways I guess. Believe me Jeannie I am only trying to help in my small way.

Hi sky,
I didn't mean to sound mad with you the other day. I was mad at the computer and took it out on you. I apologize. I hope that you and I can remain friends. If you think of anything more, please feel free to post it.
Thanks for the info on the Lemon Law. I did not realize that it applied to computers. I will contact the Department of Consumer Affairs as soon as I can. This computer of mine is not to be believed. One of the guys at Gateway said that it was weird. He was blaming the power company, but I have had two other computers and neither one of them did this. I know that you are trying to help. When I posting using the purple font, I was mad/frustrated at Gateway and my computer. I should have waited until that went away before posting anything. Please feel free to help me anytime you think of anything that would help. Again I apologize.

Latest quick update: I found a second set of batteries and am charging them so I will remove the set in the camera when these new ones are charged and put the freshly charged ones in.
Further update on last post: Thanks again, sky for mentioning the Department of Consumer Affairs. I had completely forgotten about them.

No problem Jeannie, my first 2 computers were Gateways. They try hard to meet consumer demand and support. But like most of the big 3 or more PC companies they change out certain Windows files so there bundled in components work and you can't do certain things to improve performance etc.
I don't know if your covered by the Lemon Law but most things sold are after 3 issues where things don't work are.
On the batteries just follow the instructions you got with your charger.
Good Luck with both the camera and PC. And have a real nice get to gether. And of course post some pixs for us.
For a lady....

I checked with the Department of Consumer Affairs on the Lemon Law, but in Georgia this law only applies to cars. However, the lady I spoke with gave me a list of things to get together such as the warranty, a chain of events (what happened and when and how many times and what Gateway did if anything).
Thanks to a real gentleman.

you make me blush fair lady....

Don't forget to make a folder in My Pictures to put pixs once downloaded and before sorting them out. See the screen shot I put several post above.
And have a great time at the reunion................

Hi sky,
I got back on Tuesday afternoon at about 2:45. Mama and both woke up at 4:00AM that morning so we decided to go on and get up and get away earlier than 9:00AM. We left Mama's lot at 6:30AM. I made lots of pictures at the reunion, but unfortunately, I don't have a computer that I can download them on right now. I am using one of the computers at the library but we're not supposed to upload or download anything on them. The batteries worked like a charm. I took along my extra set of batteries and my charger. I should have charged the batteries on Friday so that they'd be ready for Saturday afternoon. They were, but they were a little weak because I had put them in the camera on Thursday morning.
