Welcome to SAF!

You need to provide lots more info to get any real help. Give your system specs (processor, memory, power supply, video card etc). What EXACTLY happened when it shut down?

When you power on, do get the Power On Self Test (POST) beep? If not, do you get any beep codes? Does it start to boot and hang? What exactly are you seeing/hearing?

Welcome, newbie. There will be someone here who can give you some help when you post the specs. Also might post in the XP section, not windows 98 (I note you say XP)

Boot the machine and start tapping the F8 key during the boot process. You should get a boot menu, choose Start with last known good configuration (or similar wording).

If that doesn't straighten out the problem, boot the same way (F8) and choose Safe Mode. Go to Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore. Choose a restore point which preceeds the problem.

If the above steps do not work, you may have burned out some hardware that is causing a short. That should cause a beep code, but does not always.

Post back your results.

do you have a newly installed hardware such as VGA cards etc.? IF NONE then try those things below

helpful remedies i have tried:
1.unplugged your pc first then remove the ram clean the tips with soft fabric insert the rAM AGAIN then power your pc!
2.check for virus, spyware etc. then clean of course!
3.check all wired connections inside your cpu ide's, sata's, power check if it is not loose!
4.reformat your system last remedy lol

I missed your post. Sorry to get back so late - I hope you are still checking.

If it has power but windows is not loading in normal mode, it can be a lot of thngs (malware, corrupt driver that is not loaded in safemode, etc.) I would try a Repair Install first. If that does not work, it may be a hardware failure of something that is not used in safemode. You would have to remove unncessary parts and swap out necessary parts with known goods ones to track that down.

I too missed your post.
Did you get it fixed? confused.gif

If not then did you try unplugging everything from M-board & PSU.
CD/DVD's, HDD, Floppy, everything-USB, printers, speakers
* Leave the ram & CPU as is *

Then pull ALL cards from M-board.
Buy an old $5 PCI vid card (or borrow one) & plug it in (no AGP cards!)

All that is connected to M-board now is PCI Vid card & monitor, keyboard, PSU
If it still doesn't boot, but gives different beeps, try (turn off pc first) plugging mouse in.

Do you still get the 1 beep & freeze?

If you do, then borrow a friends PSU, or buy one.
Unplug the old one from M-board.
Plug in new PSU

If the board now works (no beep, just asks for OS) then your old PSU is dead. laugh.gif

If it still beeps with friends PSU, then it is hardware (cause your HDD isn't connected ergo no software)
But then it can only be RAM, CPU, M-board... cry.gif
