Playing with an old computer. Installed an 8gb hd but only 2gb shows. Can I increase this without reinstalling win 98. Any help welcome.

Boot to a Windows 98 boot disk, and enter fdisk. Select 'Enable large LBA' (something like this - been a long time) when creating the partition.

This may also be caused by the BIOS, not Windows. Older motherboards could not see the full drive. You need to install a "bios extender" which you should be able to download from the hard drive manufacturer website. This is a program that is installed to the bootstrap and loads with the BIOS. It will allow your system to see the full drive. If you have the disk of install tools, it will be on there.

Since you said that it’s an old computer then my guess is that the file system could be FAT 16, which has a limitation of 2GB partition size. Right-click on your C:\ drive and check its properties to see if its file system is FAT 16 or FAT 32; if it’s FAT 16, go to Start---> Programs and click on Drive Converter to convert the file system from FAT 16 to FAT 32, and see if this works for you.
