Hi, i run windows ME, media player crashed on me so i went online and get the update, which for ME is Media player 9. Is tried to install this but it told me i needed to go the the microsoft site as i needed some windows updates. I updated a few things (don't know what they were) and switched my PC off. the next day switch it on and it comes up saying "setup ipdating configuration files" then " cannotupgrade file %1-%2. Which means i can't get into windows as it doesn't get past this screen. Any ideas?

ME did not have a service pack 2. That is XP.
You could try to restore the registry.
Start with the ME boot disk. When you get the dos prompt, type: cd\windows\command (enter)
Then type: scanreg /restore.
Choose a restore point from before the updates. Restart and hopefully you will get into windows. If not, you may need to do an over the top reinstall (choose the same Win9x directory to install to).
