Ok, I have recently bought a new computer (6 months old) it is a E-system windows xp um not sure what else to say about that. but really quite recently the internet has been like working then dramatically stopping causing work loss and anger.

Now I'm only 16 so I have some average knowledge about computers so when the internet connect stops I go to the network connections and click to repair the connection. But even then most times the connection doesn't work. I also try turning off the modem and turning it back on and even rebooting its quite a struggle and really annoying.

I also called the providers (NTL but when I call them its virgin media...) they usually fix it but every step they tell me I do *again* again* again* again. and sometimes the connection doesn't come back up.
I would be very very grateful if someone could show me a way of fixing this...

Thanks alot!
*oh the modem is lik a cable/dsl? its about a year old.
Im not sure about any more.

Hi suraj^^, welcome to SAF

You may have a bad dsl/cable modem... I suppose your ISP's instructions also asked you to power-cycle it ? Some lets their dsl modem on 24x7 it may be needed to disconnect it from the wall outlet for a minute or two and replug/restart it.

If the broadband system in your area still uses the copper phone lines from your house, they may need to be checked by the telephone company for interferences or ocasional shorts (as when caused by rain or humidity).

It is also possible that you have some kind of virus/baddies playing around...

- Download and run CrapCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/
Note: in CCleaner: go to <options/advanced> Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours").

- Run updated versions of Spybot S&D and AdAware SE (one at a time), cleaning all that may be listed.
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
AdAware - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
(remember to update databases before scanning and to set Spybot to Imunize your system)

- Perform an online virus scan from http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan or from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Next, take a look at this pinned topic and post a HijackThis log here along with the online a/v scan log, as we can take a look at them: http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?showtopic=16053

I had this problem with cable. They sent an engineer to fix it. The simple answer was water damage to the cable junction box on the wall of my house. They said it kept reducing the signal, there by disconnecting the internet. Simple but it might help.
