I am helping someone on another computer forum. I started to mark the question "Outside My Expertise" and come here, but the poor guy is in such a mess I just had to try and help. Here is the problem in Aaron's own words:

"Hi. I am on Windows 98. On the taskbar there is a display button. Well I think it is and I right clicked on it and it came up with stuff like 250 x 243 and getting higher. I think that it is resolution or contrast. Well, I clicked on the highest and it came up with "Would you like to reboot your computer to change settings or do it without rebooting?" I clicked "Do not reboot" and then clicked Apply and the screen went blank. The lights are on on the screen but it is blank. I can't change it manually on the buttons on the monitor. They wouldn't work after I changed it and I can't go on my computer because the screen is blank. Can you please help? Thanks, Aaron"

I have asked Aaron to post back with his computer specs. If there is any more info needed please let me know and I will ask him. Thanks for the help.

Try booting into Safe Mode. Once there, the screen will default to 640 X 480, and can then be reset to the desired screen resolution.

When booting, ~just~ after it shows "Starting Windows 98", start tapping the Ctrl key (you have to be quick) and choose Safe Mode.
