Can anybody tell me what the fastest processor I can put into an HP DC7100 is? I've read the user manual on the HP site and it doesn't even mention what socket it uses! (I currently have a Pentium IV D in mine, but want to upgrade to a Core2Duo in the future).

About the most knowledgable site I've seen for HP upgrades in HERE, but I don't see anything listed for the processor. If you can determine exactly what motherboard is in it, you can visit that mfgr's. site and the information you require should be available there.

Thanks for that link, it will be very useful for other parts of the PC. I've done a good search on the HP site, read all their online manuals for the DC7100, but still nothing. It's no big deal, I'm happy with the speed of it at the moment anyway, I was just wondering about making it a bit more 'future proof'!

I am not acquainted with that HP model, but it is becoming increasingly common for manufacturers to make integrated CPU and mainboards together. That means that what you buy is not CPU upgradeable because it is permanently attached to the mainboard. That may or may not be the case in your situation, but I would check it out and that may be why you can't find any information on upgrading that model.

Absolutely not. I do not know of any mainstream motherboard that was originally designed to work with a single core CPU to be also compatible with dual-core. Absolutely NOT possible. AMD dual-core CPU uses the AM2 socket format; that means any MB with a 939-socket (or lower) will not work.

Also your particular HP model comes in 3 varieties. Do you know which one you have? I'm willing to bet you can find a manual on HP's website.
- Convertible Minitower PC
- Small Form Factor PC
- Ultra-slim Desktop PC

This is the first time I've ever heard of such a thing. If it was increasingly common, I'm sure I have come across some OEM PCs with such a MB. Can you please provide some details and or links to support your claim?

I have had 3 different clients come in with ECS mainboards and in inspecting them the processor was permanently affixed to the board with rivets. This is common with all-in-one mainboards that come with the processor pre-installed as an all-in-one and are sold as such. And no, I am not going to spend an hour surfing the net and chasing down examples for you, I am sure you are capable of doing that yourself. If you noticed, I qualified my comment by saying that I had no direct knowledge of HPs manufacturing techniques, just that it was a possibility to check out.

Great, that was all you had to say, but why the attitude? It seems rather ridiculous how you people accuse me of having an attitude and then I turn around and see a response like this Ranchhand. What's up with the defensive and self-righteous tone? The way I see it, it just kills you that someone with more experience and skill would come along and question a statement made by a MOD. "How dare he challenge us" you say... "The nerve!"...Perhaps given the small nature of this forum, the MODs feel their status allows them to kiss each other's behinds and never be required to back up a claim with some credible source such as 1st hand experience or links. Where I grew up asking questions and discussing topics were good ways of learning something new rather than be judged in a negative light.

All I said is I never heard of such a MB - how about a link? Is asking simple & honest questions here frowned upon here - especially if it's spoken by a MOD? I never set out to intentionally 'get' anyone nor do I have any vindictive motivation to aggravate the staff. Yet I received a PM from Compete about this issue where my tone was too harsh in some previous threads. (And yet another one from Lorraine who wrong a long winded essay that would have been worthy of a minibook by itself). Apparently I caused quite a stir if both of these staff members had to send me a PM on the same day. I thought i had a productive and clear discussion with Compete about what change he wants to see and I was perfectly willing to go along with the request - but I sure as hell don't need this aggrevation where I'm receiving PM's on the order of 1000 word essays.

And to Lorraine, you already stepped off on the wrong footing with me from the get go by mucking up a thread where I was helping Jeannie by derailing that thread into some idiotic tangent that should have never taken place. And although you later apologized via PM - it spoke volumes about your ability (or inability rather) to be an effective MOD and exemplified your inexperience. Sending your 1000 word essay to my inbox must have taken a lot of time & effort on your part. After about the first paragraph, I felt like I was reading some haiku poem by Maya Angelou. Next time don't waste your breath. After what I've seen from you & Ranchhand, I doubt this is a forum that I'd like to belong to.

Good luck in growing your forum - with what I've seen, I can understand why it's the small community that it remains to be. You people really need to grow up a little. For one minute, have the courage to step outside of your magical bubble and realize that diversity and different points of view are not always so terrible rather than shunning it as if it was some plague.

My, but are we having a bad day. I never did count your words.

Sorry you feel that way, Phoenix.

I grew up on an ranch, and always had my buddy dogs with me whereever I went. I noticed something from an early age, though.

I noticed that if I said in a low, soft tone of voice, "Nibs, you are a total ninny, I hate you, and you should learn to be a better dog.", he would come up and lick my hand and wag his tail with love in his eyes.

Now, if I said in a loud, threatening yell, "NIBS, I LOVE YOU AND YOU ARE THE GREATEST DOG EVER!", he would put his tail between his legs and slink away into a corner and sit there trembling.

How we phrase things in written form can communicate as much as the subject we are writing on. Using tact and diplomacy will take us further than being direct and undiplomatic. This may be the problem. You have a fine knowledge of hardware technology, there is no question about it. Perhaps using tact when answering questions will not put folks on the defensive.

For example, in a recent post a person attempted to use Hijack this and said she found a "list" of things, and your response:

QUOTE

You found a list... list of what? list of grocery items? list of programs? list of .... how about providing some details so we can suggestion a better answer? If you're talking about a list of cookies - they're harmless for the most part and you most certainly don't need HiJack This to those out.
It well may be you intended no insult, but some reading this detect sarcasm even though you may not have intended.

Phoenix, you are welcome at SAF. Just try to soften your comments a little. You obviously have an in-depth knowledge which is valuable, and most folks don't have that kind of experience in computer technology.
