Full Version: Request For Opinions On Sandboxie Program & Sandboxes In General

Hello everyone,

I've tried Sandboxie www.sandboxie.com and it seemed to run OK on my computer. I would like to get some opinions as to whether or not this program provides a significant added layer of security when browsing the web. In theory it sounds good, but does it really work ?

I think I remember one of the moderators here saying that "sandboxes" in general were basically worthless, but I have also seen positive reviews as well. Ian "Gizmo" Richards gave a positive review of sandboxie at www.techsupportalert.com

I would like to learn a little more about the subject, if sandboxes have no real value for security, what are the major flaws ?

I'm interesting in learning how many people recommend this type of program and why, and how many people think sandbox programs do not really offer any significant protection from malware, and why.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I'm no expert but ...
I run Sandboxie on my laptop and not on my PC. Both are used for similar surfing etc (not for adult sites or similar). I ran Adaware SE on both earlier today. On the unsandboxed PC, Adaware found 20 "critical objects" whereas on the sandboxed laptop it found none.
This was no a scientific test, but it's enough for me. I read Gizmo's article too. I'm sure there'll be much discussion here on the pros & cons, but I'd rather have a sandbox than not.

Richard
