As some of you might have seen several IT news websites are offering Trend Micro HijackThis 2.00 beta. An official statement will be posted on their website soon, but since this is a public beta of theirs I figured it'd be best if I answered the question I'm going to get asked a lot, right now.
This is not fake, I sold HijackThis to TrendMicro. Their product incorporates all changes, updates and fixes that I was planning on adding in the v1.99.2 release. I made sure of that and I hope no one will be disappointed with it.
While TrendMicro does not officially support HijackThis yet, I expect they will once it goes final.

I sold HijackThis because I had been sitting on an unfinished update for over a year and I still could not make enough time to finish it. My uni classes are taking up a lot of time and I want to set my goals a bit wider than just the antispyware business (though I still love it). Sitting on an unfinished product until it becomes obsolete is not useful, so I decided to transfer the responsibility to TrendMicro (who have also taken care of my CWShredder) so they can give it proper attention and support. Where the will take HijackThis, I do not know - but I am sure they will respect its goals and what it stands for.

Well, if it had to happen I am glad it is to Trend Micro; I am still a bit miffed at them for the sloppy handling of their upgrade, but they still seem to be a pro company. I was wondering how HT would fare with Vista entering the scene and if it would function in Vista.

Thanks for this, Ranchhand ..... you know it could also have consequences for me as well; wonder if it might be worth contacting Trend Micro in due course to make sure that my little program still works with it, especially if they start to repackage it and make it spew out a lot of copyright details prior to the main analysis ... sad.gif

Something to keep an ear to the ground with, anyway!

I don't think that you would infringe on any copywrite laws if you create your own original code and use none of theirs. Of course I'm no lawyer.

It really would have been nice if the author would have made it available as open source; I guess I can't blame the guy for wanting to make a few bucks, but now I am sure it will be a purchase-only product, that is if TM decides to develop it further. If they don't, we are all in trouble. I can't imagine how difficult it will be to try and diagnose malware infections without Hijack This!

It needs developing further ..... we're already in trouble. There are already a lot of folk who don't really rely on HJT any more because it misses too many areas for scanning now.

Thus we have Silent Runners and other tools .... I started work on another tool some time ago, but unfortunately never got very far with it. Must pick it up again and continue with it, I think.

But it was already generating gianormous logs sad.gif I'd need to have a filter on it to remove all the known legitimate stuff, and get others to help me build that whitelist, I think.

I just ran it on my machine-seems to work okay; I noticed some improvement in the layout of the various tools. I am still working with it.

TrendMicro also took over Merijn's CWShredder. If how they treated that is a indication, the future for HJT does not look bright. I believe they have never updated it, except to put their logo on it. Surely CoolWebSearch variants have appeared which would have merited updates to CWShredder.

IMHO this is not good. Because when in business growth becomes chaos to the customers.
I use Trend Mirco's Anti Virus?firewall Internet Security 2006 which works find. But to get any answer to questions is a long wait. Now why bother to even ask. Just google it or ask on SAF for help!
