Currently I run AVG Anti-Spyware, Ad-Aware, HijackThis, and Ccleaner (all through SuggestAFix's recommendations) for Internet protection.

Are there other programs I should use? (My WinXP firewall is active)

I run the above about once a week...is that enough?

Tassadar
I believe Zone Alarm Security Suite is good.

???? HijackThis is not supposed to be used once a week. It also don't protect anything, it's a diagnostic tool and can trash your system if misused.

I can't see any antivirus in your list though... rolleyes.gif

This is what I use (never been infected for more than 3 years):

AVG antivirus free, updated daily at 3h00 AM and scheduled to scan the whole system at 4h00 AM (My system is online 24x7)

ZoneAlarm free Firewall from http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/comp...reeDownload.jsp

SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html (update the definition files on install and once a week after install)

SpywareGuard: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html

RegProt (warns every time a registry key is changed and allow to deny if suspicious): http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=regprot

CrazyBrowser instead of Internet Explorer. Although it needs the IE engine to run, it has built-in content filters and popup blockers, and never crashed: http://www.crazybrowser.com/

CrapCleaner, http://www.ccleaner.com/ (when needed or at least once a week) and AVGAS (Former Ewido) in safe mode if I suspect something. It's free trial for 30 days, but it works and manually updates after that, just don't have the active shield.

NEVER let the Outlook Express preview pane active, Always delete suspicious mails before switching the preview pane back.

With safe browsing and mailing habits, this will keep most baddies away. smile.gif

Myself I use I have PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, and that's the only thing I have running..I don't have everything that comes with it running, because some of it is a nusents...I've had it over a year now, and I like it..It is a paid program. As for the other Security programs, I only run them when I think something isn't right with the computer, which isn't very often.

Like Chris said, never open your preview pane for your e-mail, I don't even use when I read my mail, I delete all email that doesn't look right, and double on each e-mail that I want to read, and it brings it up in a new window. This way, I won't forget to close the preview pane. Also, I have my email to open when highlighted at 60 sec. this way, if a bad email is highlighted, it won't open before you're able to delete it, or uncheck it....

Lorraine, what email client do you use? I've never seen one with the 60-sec delay capability, but that's a great idea. I'd be interested in checking out that possibility.

Of course, I use Mail Washer so I guess it doesn't actually matter because no mail EVER gets to my Inbox unless I want it to. It all stays on Mail Washer's server and I just delete the junk there.

Even so, I am curious about this 60-sec delay you speak of. Thanks!

Sorry ladies, but this OE feature is only to mark the e-mail as read (from bold to normal) and it's not the delay it will be open if the preview pane is active (it will still open instantly and remain marked as unread).

As you can see, it is open but still marked as unread (bold).

hairup.gif Sorry Mrs. Bond, my mistake!! geez I had it like that for so long, I could have sworn I had the preview pane closed, and the email opened when it was highlighted, so I changed it to 60 sec.

Chris, so your saying if the preview pane is opend, and an email is highlighted, that it will open, but it's still not read??? and if it's a bad email nothing will happen, because it's not read??

Anyway, I'll still keep my preview pane closed.

No. If the preview pane is open, the mail will open and be "read" instantly, so, any embedded script will run at the time you click on it, no matter if it is marked as read or not. Most spam mails has now tracker scripts which reports back to the sender that it was open and for how much time. I had a free program which does this some years ago, I disabled it because I think it was not fair to know exactly when the mail was read and for how much time it remained open (I then learned that some mails were deleted -read "closed" - as soon as opened, and this makes me sad).

This one is a bad example (so I removed its brand name):

xxx is a web based service for tracing sent e-mail messages. This service can be integrated with any bulk mail sending software. But the best performance is expected when you use it xxx Mail Sender as no additional efforts from your side will be required.

xxx gathers and keeps the following statistics:

How many people opened and read sent email message;

Recipients (email addresses) from which countries read your email (Geography reports);

What links and how often were clicked;

What images and how often were loaded

The following features are available for all registered users of the xxx service:

Unlimited email campaigns number;

Any type of reports on your choice: PDF, Excel (CSV), XML, HTML, plain text;

Daily reports by e-mail (optionally)

As you can see, any mail sent through this service and opened in the preview pane, even for one or two seconds needed to delete it, will report to the sender that it reached a valid e-mail address. sad.gif

As for 98 & 98SE users....Zone Alarm (ZA) only works on XP or higher.I was the luck 1 down-loading ZA way back when it first came out. On my XP system....I have both ZA and XP firewalls enabled. Mailwasher is a great program also !! hairup.gif

I just got updated Outlook at work. Everytime someone sends me an e-mail, this annoying ballon comes up at the bottom of the screen with part of the reply text. Is this similar to preview?

Chris
Ironbender
Not sure I understood this Chris... below, I posted my OE screen... you can see I have a spam (bold) mail, and no preview pane. I can delete the spam without running any tracking or bad stuff.

On the second shot, the preview pane is open (a valid mail is selected though). I use a "visualise" button which exist when you right-click the button bar in OE and select "customize" (locate the button at left and move it to right pane).

That is it Lorraine. It comes up on the Outlook Icon in the tray whenever I have mail. It shows partial text.

I don't have balloon tips... smile.gif I disabled them long time ago using this registry fix: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/Disable_balloon_tips.reg

Please create a system restore point before using it, as you can roll-back if you don't like it or if something goes wrong.

It's better not to have annoying tips popping up everytime. rolleyes.gif
