Hi guys! I've just joined the forum.

I've just posted this thread to see if it was possible to share a folder between the two computers. This PC uses a wireless adapter whilst the downstairs PC is wired. I have a Linksys router.

Is this possible?

Any help is appreciated, thanks smile.gif

Hi RichW, and welcome to the forum! wavey.gif

Assuming that both computers are connected to the same router, one wired and one wireless, it is definitely possible to share folders/files between the two computers. Ensure that each computer has a unique name and that both belong to the same workgroup. Next, ensure that File and Printer Sharing is enabled on both computers, right-click on the files/folders that you want to share and under the Sharing tab, click in the radio buttons beside the preferred options (eg., Full Access, Read/Write Access only, etc.).

If you need more detailed information, please post back with the operating systems that are installed on each computer.

Yes the downstairs computer is wired and this is wireless.

I think both computers have unique names, and the workgroup this computer is part of is MSHOME. I'll have to double check if it is the same as the downstairs computer which i'll do when my dad is not busy tongue.gif

The operating system installed is Windows XP.

Okay. Let us know how you fare with the sharing or if you require additional assistance.

May I ask how do I know if File and Printer sharing is enabled? Sorry if its a stupid question but i'm not exactly good at networking.
Patti
Open the Network Connections applet in Control Panel. Right-click on the Local Area Connection for the network card and then select Properties. If File and Printer sharing is enabled, it will display in the middle field, "This connection uses the following items"
RichW
Both have it enabled, both have unique names and also are now also part of the same work group.

What do I do next?

Follow the 6 steps under Sharing Files in this MSKB article:

FWIW if you've got this far with XP home you almost certainly already have some shared folders as by default XP seems to always create a folder called "shareddocs" which it will try to share.

I've managed to supress it on all but two of the computers here.
