Hi ! - Main system hot wired to ASDL router ( Netgear ) - Laptop wireless enabled connects to ASDL no problems encountered apart from a weak reception within the house ( 3 bed semi ) - outside in garden or garage no reception.

Being a brave bloke - I thought if I installed a PCI wireless card in main system ( Netgear ) I could disconnect hotwired cable and move ASDL router to different position say at bottom of stairs.

Problem - Installed PCI card ( Netgear ) will not speak to router although it shows that there is an excellent signal.

I followed instructions to the letter for installion - running set up disk first before installing PCI card.

sad.gif Help please - I am a silver surfer ( OAP ) with a little knowledge ( which can sometimes do more harm thn good )

Hot wired ? does that mean a direct connection.
We are going to take this in two steps
1. get you connected
2. then set security. Where I am, on the otherside of the pond, if you do not have security set for your wireless. PPL will surf in on you.

1. do you have the user name and password for the router ?
2. is the router 802.11g ? is the wireless card 802.11g ? note the "g"
3. go into the router and turn OFF any wireless security, just for now.
4. some 802.11g routers will do 802.11b or 802.11g or mixed mode, both g and b
make sure the router is set for whatever format your card is. If your router is 802.11b, some 802.11g wireless cards can be set for b.
5. then ( assuming xp ) click start , run
type cmd hit enter or click ok
type in ipconfig /all
hit enter
you should see your wireless ip
and your lan ip
if the wireless is bizzare looking or is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
do ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
also check the properties of your ip address to make sure the button "obtain ip address automatically" is checked.

Collingwood I had all the same problems that you are having with the Netgear router. I tried 3 different routers before going to Belkin. It's simpler to use, has a 700 feet signal upstairs, downstairs, outside in a motorhome, through walls and in the garden and garage....works everywhere with great signal. I'm now on my second Belkin set up in different places. Still no problems with either wireless hot spot I setup. Also although security is always a good idea I could never set it up. Still can't but I don't worry about it as I now live in an isolated area with no houses around and also the last place I set up a wireless Hot Spot I was in a rural area on acreage so again I didn't have passing traffic so didn't deem the security necessary. Unless I put up a neon sign saying "wireless Internet Hot Spot here" I doubt anyone will every know I'm here. However, if you do live in suburbia or in a city the security is a good idea.

Did you try connecting the blue cable that came with your router directly from your modem to your router?

Good luck
