Full Version: Is Windows Me Unstable?

A lot of computer people tell me that Me is a very unstable op sys. I have been using Me for a number of years and I
think it is Bill Gates best work. First of all Me supports many tech advances such as flash drives, better USB and Firewire support and multimedia apps that simply did not exist when Win 98SE came out. Win Me is an op sys that can run DOS apps that Win 2000 and XP can't and is therefore a better op sys for older apps and games.

I have found that many of the stability issues that people have with Me can be resolved by better data organization, and by installing certain updates such as Direct X 9b, Java2, IE6 and Windows Media Player 9 or the lates version of WinAmp.

You know it's easy to create an operating system that is very stable if you limit the apps tha will run under it to applications that are written just for that op sys. However Me can run appplications written since the days of DOS 2.0 as well as Win 95 and Win 98 apps. When you create an op sys that can run such a wide range of apps stability is bound to suffer somewhat. By the way the UPGRADE version of Me seems to be more stable and less prone to crashes than the stand alone install version of Me. Also I find that it helps to install Me from cab files as opposed to installing direstly from the CD.

The summer ME was released Microsoft ran a promo contest and I won an upgrade copy of ME. I installed it over 98SE and used it until XP was released. I never had a problem with ME and INMHO it performed better than 98SE. So I'm with you; Win ME wasn't a bad OS.

Most peoples problems with computers stem from not keeping updates current, not running anti-virus and anti-malware programs, not paying attention to where they surf and basically not RTFMs.

ME was good, but it had a few issues (power management and certain irq issues being the worst offenders). Not to mention the 512mb memory limitation.

These problems caused the system to be very unstable/crash. If you cared to read up on these problems, they were very easy to correct. And then yes, you had an o/s that was better than 98se.

Using the "portable" install option also prevented those issues.

No, it isn't... just some glitches, as with every Bill's systems. lol.gif

We used Win98SE (which was very stable) and WinME... most problems were on the WinME system, like unreliable restore features and some other minor problems related to baddies infections. If you have a 256 or 512 MB system with XP capabilities, upgrade to it.

If I (personally) had to choose, I will stay with Win98SE and never with WinME, but, after upgrading to XP Pro, no reasons to roll back. smile.gif

With some minor cares, Win XP is the most stable and bullet proof system I've ever seen. Yeah, I know, some will strongly disagree with me, but both (Win98SE and Win XP Pro) are the best OS I ever used.

We have now all of our (home lan) systems upgraded to Win XP pro SP2 (except the Internet server which uses Coyote Linux) and very few maintenance related to baddies (just the kid's system which is somehow slightly infected). Nothing really bad though, as this system has only limited accounts and is fully monitored once a week.

My computer, which used Win98SE and was upgraded to XP Pro SP2 has never been infected for the last three years or a little more. Using some basic cares, you can use and enjoy your system without any worries. smile.gif

ME has several problems which make it unreliable. Two of the worst--It handles memory very poorly and it doesn't interact well with a lot of software and hardware. ME was never supoosed to be issued either. It was the testing platform for the development of XP, as is obvious by some similarities (like System Restore). However, XP was late, Microsoft wanted to maintain it's market momentum and squelch user complaints about the lack of a new, "improved" operating system, so development of ME was continued and the program was rushed into the market. It is considered to be one of the top 10 worst tech products of all time.

Yeah, but a properly setup ME had more functionality than 98.
