Hi! a colleague of mine that only lives here two weeks out of six realized he had to pay for Internet connection for all six weeks... I decided I could allow him to use part of my Internet connection 100Mbit/10Mbit. The trouble is he is on the other side of the building ( about 10 - 20 meters away) and one floor above me. So I was thinking about wireless networking... but realized I haven't been shopping in that department for several years and don't know what is good and what is not anymore...
Keep in mind that what is important is that I get descent quality of the signal where he is... about 30 meters away...
any suggestions?

10-20 meters isn't too terribly far away, and a standard wireless router should work (depends on building construction and other things, too). If you feel extra range would be beneficial, than you might look into the higher power units, like
D-Link's Rangebooster Router.

With my Dlink 802.11G / 2.4GHz wireless router, I have connected my daughter's computer on the third floor, two computers on the second floor, and my shop computer in the basement at the other end of the house, and I get a steady 11MBPS on all of them through the floors, walls, everything. I am not sure about meters, but it is at least 40/50 ft. through two floors and several walls. And I have given permission for a friend of my son's to use our connection whenever he comes over on his laptop to connect in the family room which is on the 1st floor at the other end of the house as well. I do have a wood frame home, if it was concrete/steel like in an apartment building I am not sure how that would be.

I bought a Netgear RangeMax and it seems it is working quite nicely...

Welcome to SAF Viking
It looks like you don't have to worry about backups.
Is that 5 computers I see??

I think I see at least six maybe seven computers in that picture.
