I have a NT 4.0 network running at my workplace. Recently the hard drive on one of my clients started giving errors, so I chose to replace it (the drive still works I just want to avoid a crash).
After replacing it and installing a fresh copy of XP on the new drive, I tried to connect it to the network, however I cannot do it.
Therefore I am asking you guys, how do you add a computer with a fresh format to an existing network?
I have 2 NIC cards in the PC. One for internet, one for the network. I ran the Network Setup Wizard maybe 20 times, and I tried every option it gave me. No matter what I do, when I try to access the workgroup through My Network Places, it says something along the lines of "you do not have permissions to access this workgroup list, please contact your network administrator, the workgroup list cannot be viewed".
I put my old HD in, with the old XP that already was a client to the network, and it connects fine. I can browse/share folders printers etc. How do I make this possible with the new drive?
I copied down the manual IP numbers from the old drive and inputted them in the new drive's XP, still did nothing.
It does show "Connected" under Network Connections, however there are no packets coming in. Only going out.
I have specified the exact same computer name and workgroup name as I had in my old hard drive.
What am I missing here?
All of the other clients on the network work fine.

Hi zodiax, welcome to SAF
While waiting for some other members advices, tere are some things you could try...

Are you logging in with Admin rights ?
You can not see any other systems on the network, or you can not see this system from the others ?
Have you checked if there are no yellow warning marks on your network properties in device manager ?
Are you sure the TCP/IP properties on this system are correctly set ?
Have you a firewall installed on this new hard drive ? (it is possible that it needs to be set).
Have you tried to install NetBeui protocol on all systems ? (This works on networks using more than one OS)
Also, althought it may sound like a dumb question, have you reloaded all the motherboard and chipset drivers for this system on the new HD ?

Good question, I am an administrator, but I think I may have set myself as a Restricted User in the Group Membership tab in "control userpasswords2" (start > run > control userpasswords2). I'll check that out tomorrow.

I believe the other systems do not see this one either, because it does not connect at all. It simply is not part of the network yet.

Yes I have checked, network adapters are fine. No issues there.
Have you a firewall installed on this new hard drive ?
No firewalls installed.
Have you tried to install NetBeui protocol on all systems ?
NetBeui is present on the server, and the other client which is running Windows 98. I do not know if it is present on this XP machine.

Not specifically, I just installed XP and all of the drivers. Everything in Device Manager is perfect, no issues. I also installed the Intel Chipset Software Utility.
Thank you for your support.
