Full Version: Networking has killed my internet

Mort
Riiiiight, a brief background.

Not really a computer expert, handy here and there.
2 weeks ago my motherboard started making a very annoying noise, a small tap to the pc side stopped this, however it starts again whenever i turn on the pc and it started getting worse and worse, to the point were my incredibly short patience with PC's snapped and i kicked the pc in an attempt to stop it (i know i know, im an idiot) prompting this saga.
The kick broke my hardrive, i now have another, and after numerous problems have windows installed and the basic things installed also.

Que me trying to install my favourite game...
Now the game always gets stuck when its installing at a certain .mpq file, and its not the CD's as i have tried 2 different sets. However this isnt the problem i have come to you guys about (although if you can help itd be lovely smile.gif)

So in my attempts to get this game working, i decide to try and get the game files of my little brothers pc downstairs using the wireless network we have set up at home as some one on the games support forums reported that they had the same problem and simply copying the installed files from their relatives pcs to theirs made it ok for them. However our network wouldnt give me acces to my borthers pc, even after sharing all the necessart folders, and indeed the entire c:// drive.

So i then had the idea of trying the little sign i saw in the corner 'set up a small home or office network'

----------------

Now HERES my problem
my attempt at networking using this wizard didnt work, the problem now being, its somehow managed to stop me connecting to the internet, our connections are still there, and the wireless one i use upstairs on my pc is fine and dandy, whenever try using firefox or internet explorer it just says the page cannot be displayed, yet the router says theres no problem with the signal and our NTL set top box doesnt show any signs of their being a problem with their end.

I think the problem is a new icon has appeared in network connections under an 'internet connections' heading if i remember correctly (at a different house now) and it wont let me delete it or change it in any way, or disable it for that matter. i managed to remove the one on my pc upstairs by using system restore, however system restore on my brothers pc is turned of and is broke =/

So there you have it, my problem. I would be VERY grateful to any one who would be able to suggest anything that could sort out this problem, and im sorry for the long post, if you need any more information just say what it is and ill try and get it for you.

Hi Mort, welcome to SAF

As a first thought, a system restore back to the point before you ran the lan wizard may solve the problem.

When you reinstalled Windows on your new HD, have you loaded the motherboard and chipset drivers ? (Windows generic ones may not work on all hardware)

The system restore indeed worked on MY pc, however, the system restore on my brothers pc does not work, its both turned off so it has no restore points and is infact broken as we cannot turn it back on for some mysterious reason...

And as for the drivers and so on, as far as i am aware i have done, as i said, the internet was working fine only yesterday, the problem is that because i ran this wizard it has done something which stops both pcs from accessing the internet. :'(

And thanks for the welcome wink.gif

How are you connected to the net ? Dial-up or broadband modem ?

Some broadband ISP needs to be set with the proper ISP disk. On others, you may have to manually enter the info.

You can go to your control panel and delete any additional connections that are showing and run the lan wizard again, providing the needed info, assumig you are using broadband.

btw, when you changed your HD and reinstalled Windows, how did you managed to get connected again ? You may start from there... rolleyes.gif

Broadband digital set top box, NTL to be exact. runs upstairs into a wireless router, my pc upstairs in the attic uses a wireless card and the pc downstairs were the router is plugged into the router via ethernet.

I have tried deleted the connection that the wizard made, but it wont let me, it just says something like 'cannot delete while the connection is trying to connect' and it wont let me disable it, if i disconnect the internet the connection just dissapears so i cant delete it and then reappears when i connect the net again =/

Reboot in safe mode and delete the other connection (or all of them). Restart from scratch.
