I just bought a used laptop and am trying to connect to the Internet with it. The laptop has an internal wireless card and it recognizes the wireless network that I have in my home. At first the wireless connection did not work. Then I played around with it and got it to work for a short period of time. Then it stopped working and now will not work.
When I click on Internet Explorer, I get the typical “The page cannot be displayed” and “cannot find server - ….:
When I move my cursor over the network icon in the system tray, the following appears:
Wireless Network Connection (Eddie)
Speed: 11.0 Mbps
Signal Strength: Excellent
I have tried to disable and then enable the wireless connection, to no avail. I then attempted to “repair” the connection, and received the following message:
Repair Connection X
The following steps of the repair operation failed:
Renewing the IP address.
Please contact your network administrator or ISP

In Network Connections under “Details” the following is displayed:
Wireless Network Connection
Enabled, Shared, Firewalled
IP Address: 192.168.0.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Assigned by DHCP
Access Point
Network: EDDIE
Encryption: Disabled
Signal Strength: Excellent
Also, in the Network Connections panel, there is one Broadband connection and it’s status is disabled. There is the wireless connection, and there are three items listed under the “Network Bridge” category: 1) 1394 Connection (Enabled, Bridged) 2) Local Area Connection (Disabled, Bridged) 3) Network Bridge (Enabled)

Hi vip4bham,
Can you get it to point to your router's control panel? For example, in my case I'd point to browser window to 192.168.2.1 and this brings up the control panel for the router.
Is your connection secured? You need to put a key into the router and then again onto the laptop's wireless configuration. This will encrypt the wireless connection to prevent the stealing of bandwidth - or worse, someone setting up a key remotely and then locking you out!
Also, can you get onto the Internet from the hardwired computer?
If you change any settings (such as encryption key), use the hardwired computer for this.

When I enter my IP address in the address field, I get the following Internet Explorer error message: Internet Explorer could not open the search page.
I hardwired the laptop to the router using an ethernet cable, and I still could not get to the Internet. As soon as I plugged the cable into the computer, the following "Windows - System Error" appeared in the system tray: /!\ There is an IP address conflict with another systen on the network.
In addition to this laptop, I have four (4) other computers in the home, all of which can successfully connect to the Internet. They are two desktops that connect via a wireless card. One hardwired desktop and an additional hardwired laptop.
Both of my networking icons (wireless and hardwired) appear in the system tray and indicate that a successful connection is active.

This is because your laptop is set to automatic IP, and your home network uses static IPs. You need to check your TCP/IP details on your network and copy them to your laptop, except for the IP address, which you can manually enter. Also, your laptop MUST be on the same LAN workgroup.
You can run the lan wizard on one of your home network systems to create a floppy disk which will configure your laptop.
