When I put in your http address, I get a fail notice also. Double check and if necessary call the manufacturer, because without that you are up a creek. Your subnet mask reading is also incorrect, should be 255.255.255.0

You mentioned that you had a "modem router". Do you mean that you have a DSL modem connected into a wireless router?

no my 3 com router has a modem built into it, i have one bin onto the set up screen by entering http://192.168.1.1 eneter pass and was able to change all the setting problem i dint have anyof my isp information so i had to reconnect my old modem sign in and get the information. When i types to enter setup it would not let me. I will try change subnet mask now but that auto put in when put in the ip address. If i put it on obtain ip adress automatically then it wont detect the router just stays on limited or no connectivity but when i put in the ip i did it says it connected to 3com router fine. But i have tried this ip i have put in and get nothing im puzzled everything seems to be right.

At this point your best bet is to call the help number for 3Com that (hopefully) came with your modem/router. They may have some kind of custom setup because they have combined a router and modem. With a regular setup I can help you, but I have no experience with your equipment. Sorry. Maybe someone else on the forum can help.

yeh thanx for the help 3com is useless aswell as the site. If i live din america it would be more handy. I have the address as my default gateway http://192.168.1.1 when i type this into my address i can see my router light flickering but the setup doesn't come up if i dnt get this sorted by weekend ill have to resort to a full reboot at this minute im gunna reinstall internet explorer that should reset all internet setting and hopefull do the trick

Every thing looks fine so why cant i access my set up is the struggling question as you can see i am connected perfectly

Change your TCP/IP settings to "Obtain IP address automatically". Hopefully that will correct your subnet mask also.

If you know the router IP is 192.168.1.1 then try setting the computer to
IP: 192.168.1.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1

It's clear that your computer isn't getting an address. Addresses beginning with 169. are assigned by Windows when automatic assignment by DHCP fails.

Under 98 I've seen DHCP fail initially, then succeed later. I find that running winipcfg, selecting the adapter and selecting "renew" fixes the connection, you can tell it's worked if the address changes to 192...

Under XP you can just try the "repair connection" option.

.. Breaking New.....
im 99% there

problem solved: i had dns of my own and not obtained auto that was the whole problem stupid me.

i have now put in all my isp data on the routers (3com) it sasy im connected. When i click on internet exploroer it comes up with 'page cannot be displayed' thing. Any ideas on this on obviously it must be somehting on my compuer not the router i have cross refernce all my setting of the router and they mat the same as my mates who can connect fine

I noticed the DNS entries but I figured you might have been told to put them there. Manually set DNS will work if you get the IP right, the query just passes through the router to the internet DNS and the response goes straight back to your computer.

Also in INTERNET EXPLORER find the LAN settings dialog and clear all three checkboxes. Now under TCP/IP properties set both the Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS addresses automatically.

After you have done this try to get the connection status. Under XP thats "Connect to...","Show All Connections", right click the network connection and select "Status" then the "Support" tab.
