I'm using Nuts & Bolts to try to defrag. I get error messages: "Unable to process. Open unmovable files" and "Process aborted due to excessive disk activity." I've also tried to run ScanDisk. The message I get is: "restarted 10 times because windows or another program has been writing to this drive." I've closed all the programs in the task manager except for systray and explorer, and I still get the same message. How do I find out what program is causing this problem? smiley- confused.gif Thanks in advance for your help.

Boot into Safe Mode
Disconnect the cable on the computer that gives you internet access and run disk cleanup, and then scandisk, and then defrag. You can get into Safe Mode by tapping the f8 key a few times when the computer starts. Safe Mode does not startup the programs that run during Normal Mode. Programs running in the background during Normal Mode are getting in the way of defrag. Trying to defrag in Normal Mode is like trying to change a tire on your car as it pulls out of the driveway.

Digitaldave,

Try to close all programs that you can by ctrl+alt+del (task manager), at least thoose that you know.

Thanks Zap!

I found 4 programs that may have been the culprit. I removed them and was able to comlete the defrag. My C drive was so fragmented it took 8 hours 43 minutes and 50 seconds. Whew! Thanks for your help. smiley- thumb up.gif
