I'm trying to connect two computers to the internet. I'm using a Motorola SB4101 modem and a D-Link DI-514 router. When I input the ip address that the router manual tells me to do, it won't work. I called D-Link and they TRIED to guide me through the setup process, but they said that there's something wrong with my TCP/IP thingy. Sorry if I'm not explaining this correctly or using the correct words. I'm new at this router stuff. But I did plug the ethernet cables correctly. I'm just having problems seting up the router. Can someone help me with this media state disconnected IP problem?

Welcome to SAF!

You hook up the router to the modem. The router should get the IP address and be accessible via one of the pc's. If tech support could not get you through that, I would think maybe the router itself is defective.

Do you have a connection when the modem is connected directly to each pc? Try both to make sure the problem is not with a pc. If both work directly with the modem, hook up the router again and try to access the setup from the each pc. I had setup issues on one pc and never did figure it out. Since I was able to access the router from two other pc's, I did not worry about it.

If this still does not work (and the connection works directly with the modem), exchange the router.
