Hello everyone wavey.gif

Most of us have someone out there who is having a rather difficulut time adapting to the world of hi-tech. In my case....it's my Mom, who is having a problem with her Outlook Express 6. I think once you read on, someone surely will identify the problem and hopefully come up w/ a good solution.

For some reason, she can't open e-attachments from her known friends, instead she see's the message:

"OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail...(followed by the subject line).

I suspect her OE has some "virus" scanner on and it's blocking ALL e-attachments in an effort to protect from viruses. I tried system restore....and it's to no avail because she didn't make a good restore point after getting the computer. Shoulda, coulda, woulda....

I don't think her AVG scanner is the problem, either.

She and I would appreciate any help on this. Thanks!!

Hi Wingnut,

<Tools/options/security tab> Uncheck the second box: does not allow to download attachment that can harm my computer (or something like this).

Ironbender,

Thanks, dear friend. I'll give it a try Monday, after Christmas stuff settles down. Be it either 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Holidays'....have a good one.

Hello Everyone again!!! wavey.gif

Well, Ironbender came through and gave us all a good tip for those who had a similar OE6 problem. Mom is now thrilled to see her friends pictures of their RV getaway travels and all.

But NOW.....grrrrr....her Outlook Express 6 is being stubborn again....or is it?

Today, a friend from North Carolina sent her an email w/ ".doc" attachments. However, when she goes to open them....wammy!!!....she gets an error message:

"Wordpad has caused an error in MSWRD832.CNV. Wordpad will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer." eeeeek.gif

It's my hunch her friend sent her a .cnv file (guessing that's a PowerPoint file) and it sent down the pipe as a ".doc" that doesn't open as a .wpd file. But then again, what do I know?? If I did, I wouldn't be asking anyone's help.

But I am...and I hope someone can help out here.

Thanks guys, you've never let me down before---and I'm grateful!!!

As a first thought, you can try a system restore to a point just before the problem started. This error message suggest me that WordPad is trying to open a MS Word .doc file... this is an association (or corrupted MS Word) problem (which may be caused by a virus/baddie), as .doc files will be open by default on MS Word.

Try right-clicking on the .doc attachment and save it to your "My documents" folder. Next, start MS Word and try to open it.

Looks like MSWRD832.CNV is part of the text converters add-ins.

Most likely the Word document sent is a newer Word version than your Wordpad (and it's converters), and so it chokes.

Chris is right, save the .doc to the harddrive (C:, My Documents or elsewhere) and open it directly with Word.
Just make sure you scan it for viruses first... And of course ensure you have the latest definitions for your AntiVirus program... wink.gif

If that works, re-associate .doc files with MS Word (not Wordpad).

I believe PowerPoint files are .pps...

Of course, if you don't have Microsoft Office installed...... well, you could try a free Word Viewer.

Doh... Yes, of course... smile.gif
I don't know why I assumed that Wingnut would have Office (Word) installed... rolleyes.gif

Thanks Jim!
