I have two computers on a network one is running Win XP pro and the other Win NT. My problem is that whenever I try to connect to the WinNT machine I am prompted for a user name and password. I go ahead and type in user name and the password also put a check in the REMEMBER PASSWORD checkbox. I connect fine but when I shut down the XP machine then start again I am prompted for this user name and password. I would like to set so I am not prompted for this password everytime. I have another XP computer on this network that I do not have the same problem with. I believe there might be some other setting on my XP machine or it may be a setting on the NT machine for the XP machines account.

Any ideas for a fix? Thanks! wacko.gif

Not really sure, but sounds like the shared files and folders on the NT machine are password protected. Just go to the sharing properties on the NT system and set it for no password.

Chris,

I am not really that familiar or less familiar that is with Win NT I dont know where to make that setting change. IF I right click on the folder and then sharing I dont see any password settings there. I do see general, sharing and security tabs. I have 2 other computers which can gain access to this NT system without a prompt for a user name and password.

My next thought is that maybe there is a services on the XP machine that needs to be changed. I have an xp machine without this problem which is described in computer properties as:

Microsoft XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 1

The one with this problem is running:

Microsoft XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

I am comparing the services between the two machines and am finding some differences in settings and services available there seems to be more for the newer machine (the one having the problem)which is only a couple months old.

I am going to tinker with these service settings scared[1].gif

Thanks for any suggestions

Are you sure that the user account on both machines (NT and XP) are identical? Same user name [description doesn't matter] and the same password?
Also ensure that the password is not set to expire (on the NT machine).

I am assuming that both machines are in a Workgroup, and the workgroup name is the same?
When you browse the network (Windows Explorer) do you see all computers?

Passwords are "remembered" only per session. This does not stay persistent across reboots.

But if the account and password are identical on both XP and NT machines, and the Workgroup is the same, it should not even prompt you.

All computers are visable in Network places----->Microsoft Network---->Entire network it is when I click on the NT machine I am prompted for user and pass

The username on the NT machine is the same as the WinXP Full Computer Name in System properties under the computer name tab

The computers are in the same workgroup

On the NT machine in user properties for this account Password never expires is checked and The account is a member of Adminstrators and users in groups

I am probably overlooking something banghead[1].gif

The password has been left blank but does appear in the form of xxxxxxxon the NT machine. I have cleared that and assured that it is blank. When I do log on from the XP machine I am able to without that password

???What good is the "remember password" checkbox in the prompt on the XP machine if it is reset everytime I reboot then. I can get to the NT machine until I reboot without checking this box

Just had a thought there is another user name listed in the drop down menu within the log on prompt is this going to this user name as default and deciding it is the incorrect one so it is prompting me for another username?
How do I remove this one? I searched for it with the search assistant and also in the registry and what I came up with I removed but it is still there

Thanks for any help Rob

Rob,

In XP, you can add/remove local accounts through Computer Management. This should be in the Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management. In the MMC, go to Local Users and Groups, then Users.

I think your problem here is the blank password. Try and set a password on the account, use the exact same password on NT and XP.

Also, make sure the NT username is the same as the XP account "Name", not "Full Name".

You mentioned "Computer Name"; this has nothing to do with User (account) names.

Finally, try and avoid spaces etc in the User name. Don't make the account "Rob's Account" or something like that. Make the user account "rob" and then the Full Name (Description in NT) can be your full name.

Hope this helps,

Ronald.

The problem was here on the XP system. Thank you very much for the help.
