Full Version: PC and Mac sharing internet connection

I originally posted this on the 'internet issues' forum but now realise it should really be on here (I think smiley- confused.gif ) and I didn't know how to move it (or delete the original so apologies for the duplication).

I have a Windows XP and connect to the internet using broadband (so all of my phone sockets have DSL filters on them)

We've just acquired an E-Mac. The original intention was to have it as a standalone - not connected to the internet - but my kids are putting me under pressure to connect it to the internet too.

Is it possible for the Mac to share the internet connection my Windows PC uses? Is it as simple as attaching an ethernet cable from the mac to a 2nd DSL filter on a phone line nearby or is it more complicated than that?

I've done several internet searches to try and find the answer but no joy - they all assume the two are networked which they are not.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated, as you might have gathered i'm a bit confused!

Thanks

Hi Ref,

Never tried this, but it's possible. Take a look at: http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2002.../19/mac_pc.html
http://www.macwindows.com/Network.html

Hope it will help,

Chris

Thanks Chris, I'll have a look at these later. Out of interest , what did you search under to find these as I drew a blank whenever I searched.

Congratulations on the appointment as moderator. smiley- thumb up.gif

googling the proper keywords normally works biggrin.gif
In this case, I googled "connecting mac to pc" (without the quotes) and voilá !
Note that you need to quick read descriptions (and web addresses) to filter what results may be handy or not, and avoid bad keyworded websites (some sites has the proper keywords but are bogus, and it's common to be drived to a porno one) eeeeek.gif

no secrets at all smile.gif
