I just got a direcway 2 way system and I have the 7,000 modem. It is wireless but i have to put it through a router (for security reasons). I am trying to hook up my home computer to it so i dont have to pay for two services. I ran a cat 5 cable from the router to my home computer. I have called direcway and they didnt help my with this. banghead[1].gif

What is wrong is it connects fine and everything but the internet still doesnt work. I did some dos cammands over the phone with the direcway people like: ipconfig, Purge www.yahoo.com, and that didnt help which they thought was wierd. So If anyone could help me that would be nice, but if not i will have to have a guy come to my house and fix it, but thats not worth the money.

Thanks for all the help...

Is your Cat5 cable wired straight or crossover ?

If it's wired as "crossover", it will never work. You need a "straight" wired cable between your router and your computer.

What is the difference between the two? I dont know which one i bought.
Ironbender
You can take a look at http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/cat5_cables_.htm on how the cables can be wired.

You can take a look at the wires colors at both ends, or you may return to your dealer and ask him... rolleyes.gif

It is the right wire. So now what is wrong?

First I want you to know that I no nothing about configuring a satellite network system.

The the following: Start > Run > type command in the window. Now type ipconfig /all | more. Write down what you see. In the above command, the | symbol is done with the shift key and then tapping the key above the enter key.

Type ipconfig /release (this re-leases your internet connection)
Type ipconfig /renew (this renews your internet connection probably another 24 hours)

Are you using a dynamic IP address (DHCP) or static (fixed) IP address. In any case, do not let us know what the IP address is.

Also from the command prompt type the following. ping localhost and tell us what you get.

Be very specific about what commands direcway people had you use. Also ask the people at direcway to bump your service call up to a level two technician.

It would seem to me that direcway should be able to get you on line. It also seems to me they are not much help. I don't know if it is advisable to take the router out of the picture for test purposes at this time. This problem sounds like you need to make some adjustments to the tcp/ip settings. Let us know what you get from trying these things.

When i do the ipconfig /all | more prompt i get:

Do you have a host name? I believe this is the name you give your computer.

QUOTE
DHCP enabled: no

Unless your ISP gave you an fixed IP address, then DHCP enabled needs changing from no to yes

QUOTE

The command is ipconfig /release (note the space between the g and the /

Likewise the ipconfig /renew has to have the space just before the /

ping localhost (one word) should repeat back to you 127.0.0.1

Ping yahoo.com.

Since direcway asks you to release and renew, they must be using DHCP. As soon as you turn on DHCP (change DHCP enabled to yes) and then do the release and renew, you will probably be on the internet within a few minutes. If you have problems after doing this, call direcway again and ask if their web server use dynamic (DHCP) internet protocol addressing as opposed to static IP addressing. Often, businesses use static (dedicated) IP's, whereas home users use dynamic (DHCP) addressing. I am surprised that direcway does not have you up and running by now; they should because that is their business.

Yes i get a host name.

I did spell the cammands right with the space and the one that is two words. It still gave me the error.

How do you change the DHCP from disabled to enabled?

Thanks so much for the help Zap we are almost there! smiley- thumb up.gif

How do you change the DHCP from disabled to enabled?

Click on Start
Control panel
In the left hand frame switch to classic view if necessary. You can switch back to category view later if you like.
Double click Network connections
Right click the Local area connection
Click Properties
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Click Properties
Click on Obtain an IP address automatically (this is how DHCP is enabled)
Click OK

After doing this, reboot the computer and then go back and do the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew.

This should get you out on the internet. If you still have problems, then call direcway and ask them what they would like you to use for a preferred and alternate DNS. If they do not have an answer, we can provide one. The odds are though that when you do the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, the DNS will be found automatically as well as an IP address. Let us know how it goes.
bpdorfly
I did the automatic ip and restarted the computer and ran the release it said it has already been realesed. Then I did the renew prompt and it said The RPC server is unavailible. thair.gif

Things can get frustrating. Do another ipconfig /all | more and see how things are looking. After doing this, call direcway and tell them what is happening. Also ask what to use for DNS entries. If they are still not very helpful, then get back here and we will try a couple more things. You might find setup help here.

Also, get in front of your computer while you call direcway tech support at 1-866-347-3292. Tell them what you have done and where you stand now, and they will help you get on line. Direcway may or may not ask you to take the router out of the picture for the initial setup. I do not have an account with direcway so the company will not talk to me. unsure.gif

I wish I had an answer. Search Google and see what you can find.

Try lowering the security settings in IE browser and see if this helps.
bpdorfly
That didn't help either it does the same thing. It shows the "this page cannot be displayed" screen.
bpdorfly
I called back again and the guy helped me fix it. Problem solved. Thanks for the help guys! biggrin.gif
zap
Can you tell us what was done to fix this so we can all benefit?
bpdorfly
I didn't have dns number on my computer yet so he got the one from my laptop and i put it on the other computer and there we go.

Bada bing bada bang. lol.gif

How he got the internet on in the first place he found out what my ip adress and subnet mask and gateway number was and that got it on. THanks for the interest and you were a lot of help. Thanks again!!!!
