linksys wrt54g broadband with telewest *uk

hi guys first question:
when i get internet from my telewest modem *without using any router*, windows doesnt give me an adress tipe, ip, subnet mask and gateway (when I click to the icon in windows bar at right)

but if I try ipconfig in msdos I can see it is asigned.

if this that I say it is normal, here u are 2nd question:

Ive got 2mgs conection broadband with telewest and when seting it up my router linksys wrt54g, it asks about conenection> I can chose between dhcp, PPPoE, static IP, and other ones. When i chose DHCP it asks about host name and domain name. what should I have to type there??

thanx

Well, I am here in the USA, but I would assume that broadband/internet connection works the same way. Your IP address should be generated and assigned by your ISP (Telewest UK), so that is where you should start. .

Try to ping your own IP address. It should send 4 packets successfully almost immediately. Call your ISP, explain your problem and ask what IP address you can use to try to ping them (the ISP provider). That will definitely tell you that their end is good if you get 4 packets sent successfully. Then ask them to ping you, and that should also go through.

If everything pings through successfully, the problem most likely is a misconfiguration in XP (assuming you are running XP). Make sure that auto-assign IP address is enabled and/or DHCP-Dynamic Host Config. Protocol-is enabled. You do not want static IP address assigning enabled unless you know what you are doing and have a special reason for doing that. Try to get connection straight through the cable first, and then if you want to add a router afterward for security or additional computers it is a lot easier.
