I have HP pavilion 8533z, installed new MB, now windows 98 does not recognize cd-rom. I do not have recovery disk, and can't get drivers from HP. Wanted to install XP but can't untill cd-rom is working. Need help.

what brand and model mobo did you install..?

tell us where you have your HD and CD drive connected along the IDE cable and what are the jumper settings for both.

no biggie but just for the record, how did you get win98 installed w/o a cd drive working?

I was given an old computer to mess with, CPU (Intel 500 socket 370), MB was fried, replaced MB w/ Biostar M6VLR and CPU w/ PIII 766 socket 370, OS on system was Windows 98. System has CD drive (set as master) on end of IDE cable, zip drive (set as slave) on IDE secondary on MB. Hard drive (set as master) on IDE primary on MB. Bios shows these drives, but under MY Computer the CD and Zip drive are absent and will not function. Tried different cable and another CD drive with no luck. Wanting to change OS but can't until CD drive works. I am very new to doing this type of stuff, and appreciate any help you can give me.

You need to reinstall motherboard and chipset drivers, and, eventually, Windows98 on top of itself (boot from a floppy with cd support and reinstall Windows on the same folder).
This will force it to detect the hardware again and replace any corrupted files.

Or, after proper mobo/chipset drivers installed, try removing the CD-rom from device manager and reboot. This will eventually work.

[QUOTE] I have the EXACT same problem and I had no idea what to do. Still don't really, I don't really no one part of a computer from another so I can't fix it, but I sure as hell can try. biggrin.gif
