If you are trying to boot from a Hard drive on which Windows was installed and working on another computer, it may not work because Windows will try to load and work with your old registry and hardware settings.

To solve that, you'll need to boot from your original Windows CD and try to perform a repair install (reinstall on top). This may work or not, but it worth a try...
If not, I am affraid you'll have to perform a fresh install.

I notice that you are going from a 32bit OS to a 64bit OS. That also could be a reason. Chris' suggestion to perform a repair reinstall is good. But before you do that, restore your BIOS to default factory settings; I have seen many times a new BIOS that somehow gets messed up in its settings when the board is being installed. Restoring to default settings helps get to bootup, especially if you have to repair XP. There is usually a jumper on the board that does this, or just remove the battery for 20" and then snap it back in.

Also Do I have to have the 64bit operating system to run this?
Ironbender
No. Windows XP will install normally.

Reset your BIOS as ranchhand suggested and try a repair install with your XP disk.

You can do it, no problems.

Note that a "repair install" (reinstall on top) will not cause any loss of data. It's only a matter of choice.

Ok here is my dilemma I am in the process of moving my windows disk is packed up can it be any windows disk for reinstall? My brothers xp disk is out as we have his new computer I got a new hard drive we hooked it up as master and my old as slave but its stuck at the screen where it says tab or del to enter bios but its not going anywhere when the mainscreen came up it said I had no hard drives primary none secondary none etc. I just want my computer to work hehe and if I take it to these people here they will charge me 75 an hour 50 a half hour I should be able to do this I have been putting computers together for awhile and this one is being persnickety. :/ Any ideas if my bros windows disk will work or does it have to be the same one?

I have burnt my pocketbook with all the parts I have bought guess I should have just bought a cheap ###### store system hehe. Thanks for all your help tooo!!! hug.gif

Hi Hacku69,

What are you trying to do exactly ? (you are confusing me) eeeeek.gif

It's as simple as explained above. Or you try to perform a repair install on your previous HD with the proper Windows CD (the one you used to install Windows on it before, NOT ANOTHER Windows disk), or, you make a fresh install on another HD with your own Windows disk, letting the other drive as slave.

Using your brother's Windows disk is not recommended (and is considered piracy). You must use your own.

If your hard drives are not hooked and jumpered properly as master and slave, you'll neve manage to do anything.

CD key has always the proper size. I think you are reading another number rolleyes.gif

Raining heavily here with thunderstorms/lightnings, so I need to quit for a while. Will come back later.
