Hi pie_man, welcome to SAF

Once reformatted, you must reload the proper motherboard and chipset drivers (that comes with a CD shipped with your computer), as Windows generic ones will not work perfectly on all hardware.

If you do not have the CD with the original laptop drivers, you may find them at the manufacturer's website.

And to add to Chris' suggestion, if you simply cannot find any iformation or your mainboard drivers are lost, download the free version of Sandra Analyzer and it may tell you the mainboard and specs so that you will know what chipset you have; then go to that manufactureres website and d/load their latest version.

Hi pie_man,

That site worked OK for me, so maybe it was down or there was some other problem when you tried. Try again and see hoe it goes.

I take it you're able to access the Internet normally? There are no sites you should be able to get to but for some reason cannot?

I'm assuming Windows XP here, so can you try the following:

Go to Start >> Control Panel
Double-click on Sounds and Audio Devices
Click on the Hardware tab.

Select each device in turn and check to see if you have the text This device is working normally under the Device Properties (amongst other things).

Another thing ... silly I know, but it's wirth checking to make sure the sound hasn't been muted or the volume turned down to zero.

Let us know how it goes!

Download and run the utility suggested by ranchand before and post system specs here.
