Full Version: Win98 Install On A Laptop With Swapout Drives

My friend owns a Dell Latitude D300XT notebook with Win95 on it. He has never updated his antivirus. The laptop was so infested that the registry and the OS was beyond help. He had long lost his recovery disk for it. He decided to FDISK the hard drive and tried to run a clean 98SE full install. Well the problem is that this laptop uses swappable drives. In other words you can’t use the floppy and the CD-Rom at the same time. When he boots to the 98 Boot Disk he can’t get the CD drive to be recognized or keep the CD driver. I suggested that he enter the BIOS and select boot to CD first. No cigar! Is there a procedure to install Win98 CD to a laptop with interchangeable bay drives? Can anyone help my friend? I’m stumped.

Hi intosuggestions, welcome to SAF

Not all Win98 CD are bootable. You can download a CD boot disk at http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/win_boot.iso and burn a boot cd with it. (The CD image needs to be burned using a program that recognized ISO images)

Next, set your CD to first boot device and boot normally. Remove it and insert your Win98 disk to perform install.

intosuggestions,

I had the same problem with my T-21 Thinkpad. I solved it by creating a "boot CD" using my CD burner and Nero software.

Nero has option to create "bootable" CD, so I just copied Win98SE boot floppy on to a CD-R.

With CD drive installed, the "boot CD" loads exactly like the floppy. After selecting "CD drive support" and changing prompt to whatever letter boot CD assigned to CD drive, I just swapped Win98SE CD for boot CD.

After that typing "setup" started Win98SE loading.
