I am having a strange problem with my main computer. I have Charter cable internet, am running Win XP.
I have a LinkSys router and a wireless card on my laptop. My husband has a wireless laptop.

History of the problem:

Main PC: started to load pages very slowly and would not load My Yahoo homepage, Google or any page that had googlesyndication listed in the address. I did some research and thought that I should run an Adware program.

The PROBLEM: Main PC shows a symbol that states that there is little or no connection to the Internet. I have tried to run Charter Pipeline diagnostic program and also the virus program provided by Charter. The Pipeline attempts to repair the problem but continues to be unable to find an IP address. No virus is reported. I have tried everything that usually works but still can't connect. thair.gif

The weird part: My husband's wireless laptop (that I am using now) can hook up to the 'Net using the connection from my Main PC.

What do I need to do to get my Main PC back online?

Hi pagenie, welcome to SAF

Are you using any proxy (such as AnalogX or WinProxy) ?

Google, Gmail and other websites may not work if passing through a Proxy.

Also, are your(s) system(s) using random IP addresses ?

Thanks for the welcome.

I don't know the answers to your questions.
Could you please tell me how to find out ?

Have you tried a system restore to a point just before the problem started ?

I don't know the answers to your questions.

About the proxy, the main system may have some icon on the taskbar (WinProxy mask or a green or red AnalogX round icon).

IP addresses are shown on Lan properties... right-click your local connection, select properties, select general tab, TCP/IP properties. You'll have something like this (sorry, my XP is in Brazilian Portuguese):

You can also select "repair this connection" from the left pane on Local Connection window, but I still think (and hope) a system restore will work.

Chris

If this does not work, we'll need to run some specialized programs to search for malwares/spywares...
