When I open links and/or programs on my updated XP sp1 os occasionaly my screen will go black (sometimes for up to a minute) should I try getting sp2 or is there another way around this problem?

Sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem. What are you doing when it goes black? Do you know what is trying to display when it happens?

Try the following: check to make sure the video cable is not loose or damaged. Check to make sure the power to the monitor is stable - look at the cable as well as the electrical outlet (if you dont have a tester, try a different outlet).

Next, download and install the latest video card drivers.

If the above does not work, let us know and include your system specs in the follow-up.

Can you post your system specs please ?

This sounds like and IRQ problem. For example the mouse and the video card are trying to use the same interrupt at the same time. When you publish the specs on the computer, please tell what program you are opening or give us the URL for the link you are trying to connect to when the problem occurs. You have updated your video driver. You may also need to remove the mouse from device manager and let windows find it again on reboot. Is your mouse wired or wireless? Is the mouse connection USB, PS2 or serial.
