I just got a D-link DI-604 a few days ago. I have a westell 6400 hooked up with DSL through bellsouth. the two computers that i have hooked up to the router have great internet connections, without any of the Dlink software installed. I have been paranoid of going through Dlinks official installation steps simply because it works now... and in the past things that worked stopped working when done the right way... lol. I would like to get file sharing set up and be able to view each computer on a network, (soon a 3rd will be added). I cannot host games. I think that may be part of the issue. I got windows firewall (and i hate it) and no other anti-virus programs currently. I should be getting one soon unless you guys can point me in the direction of an efficient and cheap one. I haven't been able to find any information anywhere on how i can fix my issue of not being able to host a game. When i tried to host Kohan (Arhimans gift) it told me that i couldnt host because my IP and external IP were not the same. I truely have no idea what this means. Any help you guys can give me on these issues would be greatly appreciated! I'm sorry if i posted this at the wrong spot.

Hi Psychodeath, welcome to SAF

Including hosting games ?

Are you trying to host the game to allow others to play on the net, or to play between your two computers ?

You need to install, on network properties, the "Printer and file sharing for Microsoft Networks" service (or something like this...my OS is in Brazilian Portuguese). Also, each computer on your network must belong to the same group (default is MSHOME, but you'd better use some own name/description).
After that, you must right-click on folders (or entire disks) on both computers to allow what will be viewed/shared (right-click, select properties, sharing tab).
You can also share optical disks using the same method.

Printers may be installed as local on one computer, and as shared on others.

for the hosting.. i wasnt talking about anything big.. i just wanted to be able to host an internet game (such as warcraft 3 on the battlenet) and have them join... either by means of internet or network works for me. Between the two computers would be sufficient. Thanks for replying so fast! I really dont know too much on these topics. thanks for the advice so far.

No problems... networking between two systems is quite easy, but when you connect to a hub or switch, things become tricky...
Two Systems can be connected together by a crossed cable... Using a hub/switch needs straight ones.

You may take a look at tis resource to learn a bit more on that: http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,...1059969,00.html

Also, take a look at this site, on how to cable your network through a hub/switch: http://www.zytrax.com/tech/layer_1/cables/tech_lan.htm

OK i went and ran the windows network setup program. I made my little network name and gave each computer a unique name. I can open the workgroup on this computer but cant access her computer at all because "i dont have permission" and she cant access the workgroup at all because she "doesnt have permission" what next?

Have you shared the disk/folders you want to see on both systems ?

(right-click on folder or entire disk you want to share and select sharing properties >>read-only, free, with password...)

Computer name is not a problem, unless both are on the same workgroup. You may also assign an internal IP address to each, because when you have two or more comps on the same network, mostly with different OS, random IP may mess with the entire network.

My home network has 6 computers with addresses from 192.168.0.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) to 192.168.0.6 (same subnet mask)

The gateway (computer which connect to the net) is 192.168.0.1

Remember, as I said before, that direct connection between two systems are made via a crossed cable, and between comps via hub/switch are made via straight cables. Crossed cable is also used between the broadband modem and the hub/switch.

If the proper services/protocols are set, both computers will see each other via Windows Explorer (my network places).

You must have the following services/protocols installed:

- Microsoft Network client
- Files and printer sharing for Microsoft networks
- TCP/IP protocol

TCP/IP properties are shown below (sorry, my OS is Brazilian Portuguese)

As you can see, my system is the third one on the network...

ok. Now i can access her files and she can do the same for mine. We both turned off our firewalls because they kept getting in the way of the network. I think we both still have the issue of not being able to host games for eachother to join (the game in this case is Warlords Battlecry III) The game supports tcp internet tcip address and IPX we have the ipx set up but i dont think it is done correctly, but i am not sure. You have been very helpful so far! I have the cables done as your pages and advice suggest. What do you think some of the issues could be on our continued failure to get a game going?

I will just jump in here for a side comment, I don't want to derail the interchange. Do not run your system out on the internet without a firewall, that's like walking through the jungle without a gun. Some hacker will drop a backdoor trojan on your harddrive, and you will have problems that will keep you up at night.

The best all-around bargain for a super anitvirus and firewall is Trend Micro, PC Cillin. Newegg has bargains on it all the time, Newegg has it Here.

Note that you can pay as little as $15 with rebate if you can provide proof of ownership of Norton or McCafree, read the rebate coupon carefully. If you do this, be sure to deactivate the Windows Firewall. Oh, and you are right, XPs firewall is garbage.

is there a way to change my external IP address? That seems to be the error i have when trying to host a game for friends to join...
