I live in Australia, which to my knowledge is region 4.

So I pop in a region 4 disc and my computer says "You have 1 chance left to select what region you are" I get the coice of "2: Western Europe, Japan and South Africa" or "4: Australia, South America" so I select Australia and it says "The disc's region code does not match with the DVD player's region designation." Same thing when I try the other option.

I know the DVD is not faulty because I bought it in a store and watched it on my TV. I've watched plenty of movies on my computer, but now I'm getting this error and its quite perplexing.

When I tried to view it in Windows Media Player I get this message: "Your system is set to Region 1. To play this DVD, set your system to Region 2 or Region 4." Then I am propted with a box which has a selection of countries to select from. I pick Australia and get this message: "This is the last chance to set the region setting on your DVD drive. Are you absolutely sure you want to proceed? If you answer OK, you will not be able to change the region setting anymore even if you reinstall the operating system." I clicked OK and got this message: "Unable to update region setting. Please make sure the drive contains a region 4 media and you have administration privilege" (it actually said "privilege") Oh, and I am an administrator by the way.

So anyway, what can I do? Is it impossible to watch DVD's on my computer any more? Can I set the region to 0 to pick up any DVD with no fuss, no matter where it comes from? Is there a software I can download to play my discs from now on with no fuss?

Thankyou for your help, in advance. And thanks for reading that all (or atleast skimming it).

There is software you can get to remove a dvd's region code while you play it.

Such as, DVD Region CSS Free
DVD Region CSS Free enables you to watch any region DVDs on your region-locked (RPC2) DVD drive. It will work, even if you can not change the DVD drive's region and does not require any firmware modifications.
DVD Region CSS Free disables region check for software DVD players such as PowerDVD, WinDVD, ATI DVD Player, DirectDVD, NVDVD, CinePlayer, Windows Media Player, PCFriendly Player, InterActual Player, TheaterTek DVD and UltraDVD. You can manually add additional players to the list.

Or, AnyDVD
AnyDVD is a driver, which unprotects DVD-Movies automatically in the background. This DVD appears unprotected and region code free for all applications and the Windows operating system as well.
