Hello everyone:Haven't posted in a long, long time. I have an old 10 gig Gateway comp almost filled up. So I went and bought an 80 gig hdd. I installed it with WinXp. My problem is that I can only see one hdd and only when I switch the wires. I have to put the wires from originall hdd to new hdd and that way they work. I go to my computer and cannot see the other hdd. If I have to go to bios or anything else please direct me otherwise I'll still be lost. I would like the old ten gig as the primary and the new 80 gigs for storage. I thank you all in advance. royjrvic

HI royjrvic

You must set/jumpering your 80 gig HD as master/slave, depending on where you plugged it.
If your system has a 10gB hard drive as master and nothing else on the second end of IDE flat cable, or if you have other device on second IDE cable (like a CD drive) and you are connecting it at the second end of the cable, then you must remove 80gB HD jumpers and connect it as primary or secondary slave.
If you are connecting it to the second IDE, and nothing else, it must be jumpered as master (secondary master).

Standard mounting is primary master 10gB on 1st IDE, primary slave 80gB on same cable, CD/DVD on 2nd IDE.

Jumpers settings are on your new HD manual.

If you have an old BIOS, search for "auto-detect hard disks", or set both HD to auto.

Ironbender I coudn't make anything work. I was getting disk error and nothing else, I forgot to mention that I also installed a cd-burner I didn't have one before. I noticed that cdrom wasn't working, and all I could see was WinXP logo then froze there. I had 10 gig at original place with wire strap at the same place, then I installed 80 gig with same wire strap at the middle of wire strap and other end at comp. Is this step correct? Bios was not recognizing second hdd. When nothing was happening I removed cd-burner and installed original cd rom and now I can see WinXp like before, connecting one hdd at a time. The jumper wires appear to be fine, the 10 gig as master and 80 as slave. You think maybe I burned new cd-burner? Also the little hdd light that flickers was staying on, now it's working normal. Thanks. P.S. This has turned to a triple emergency.Roy

Now you confused me...

This is the correct way on cabling 4 devices on 2 IDE:

Masters must have a jumper set as Master, Slaves normally have no jumpers.

Ironbender you had it right first time up. I apparently didn't see those tiny jumpers as I thought I did, the new one was set as master when I wanted it as slave. The new 80 gig didn't come with instructions...Bios did recognized it on "auto detect". Comp gave it the letter E cause on 1st hdd I have Win 98 and WinXp. One last question:What do I do to use 2ndhd as storage...what I mean is how do I send programs etc..there??? Thanks a million Ironbender. Good thing I didn't work today I would have gone crazy thinking how to fix it. Thanks!!!royjrvic

It will need formated to use it. If it is being detected in My Computer right click on it and hit format.( which would delete any thing on it)After that just send anything you want to save to it.
