networking - How to share printer - please help...!!!

Respected Tech Gurus,

Please help me with following:

There are two computers A and B (say).(They are in two adjacent rooms)

A has windows advanced server 2000 OS.
B has windows XP professional OS.

HP laserjet 3015 is connected to computer B.

Now I want to take printouts on Hp laser jet printer from Computer A also at times.

I understand that this requires networking.

However, I am NOT a very computer savvy person and therefore need help.

I have purchased CAT 5 cross over cable and Compex 8 port switch.

Also computer A has two NICs - one onboard Intel 865 and another extra Dlink.

Also computer B has one NIC.

Now please say me someone step by step how do i network the two computers so that I can:

1. share files
2. share printer
3. share internet connection

Please explain me step by step assuming that I have to do networking of my own and I have never done it before but ready to do it now.

please guide.

Thanks and best regards

sunando

Hi sunandoghosh,

Not sure a crossover cable will work correctly on a switch... my network is cabled as follows:

Computer with two nics: (Win98SE)

crossed cable on nic1 to broadband modem
straight cable from nic2 to switch

Other computers: (Win XP Pro)
Straight cables from nic to switch

Take a look at this resource:
http://www.zytrax.com/tech/layer_1/cables/tech_lan.htm

- Run lan wizard on computer A and create a disk to set computer B.
- Install ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on computer A
- On both computers, set folders that you want to share by right-clicking on them and selecting properties/sharing
- Install "shared" printer on any computer (if it's still installed, delete it and add it again as shared)
- Install printer program/drivers on the other computer and (if your lan is correctly set), add the printer from the first one.

What I did was install a router with a printer port.

OK
What you need to do is this.
To the computer with the two NICs, connect one of them to the DSL
modem and the other to the second computer. as long as you have
only two computers on your network, you wont be needing the switch.
On the first computer run windows network wizard and set it so that
HE is the one connected to the internet and other computers connected
to him. on the other computer do the opposite, set it like HE is connected
throw another computer. after doing so enable file and printer sharing
throw control panel on both computers and share the resource you
would like to use on the net (drives, printers etc')
Good Luck
