Ok heres the scoop im at my wits end with my compy i have no idea whats wrong with it. whats happening is when i turn it on (everything is plugged up correctly) the monitor will not recieve signals from my computer all the moniter say is "This is a monitor self test, Your Monitor is wirking fine, Please check your computers power and moniter cabels".... Of well i did that and it still dowsnt work i went and go 4 differnt other power cabels and it still dosent work so ithought maybe it was the monitor so then i went and borroed 2 other different monitors and both of then didnt work. But the weird thing is that like 45min-1hour ago it was working perfectly at my dads house but when i brought it here it just will not work!!!Ive done this 2 other times with the same result. so i thought myabe its my video card(Radeon 9100)so i brought it back to my dads and plugged it in and it worked. but i broughtr it back over here and it dosent. So i then i thought myabe its the outlet so i got a new power strip and eerything ent into 4 or 5 differnt rooms upstaris and dfownstaris(+the Garage) And it still will not work!! but the weird thing is about 1 or 1 and a half months ago my computer was working just fine over here. but then we had a lan party at my dads house so i brought it over. but as soon as i took it over here Bam it wont work! So i think it might be that the house dosent have enough power to support my computer could this atually be a problem? so i asked my dad and he said that my problem might be fixed if i got a APC but i really dont wana go blow $70 for a nice APC and plus i dont even know if that is the problem. I am typing form my parents computer in their room and i actually Plugged me computer into there room and the same thing happend. Has anyone ever had his problem becasue ive been around computers since i was 6 years old and we build all our own compys. Oh and another thing when i turn on my computer the message on my moitor goes off for like .5 of a second then it comes on again then once i have waited awhile i turn my computer off and it does it again and my monitor goes blank for about 2-4 seconds then the nasty red greed blue sign come on again!! Plz someone help me!

Hi Jonathan, welcome to SAF

Not sure I understood all this, but, are you trying to say that this (or any) computer works anywhere but not at this home ?

If it's the case, you may contact your light and power company, as it may be some problems with cycles/hertz... (we use 110v. ~60Hz power here, and in Europe they uses 220v.~50 Hz)

Variations on AC power demand may drop this cycling below 50Hz and this may cause some weird results.

If not, the videocard or the PSU may be the culprit. There are cheap PSU testers on the market that can show you what is going around...

Hello thanks alot Chris

Yea my computer will work at my dads house but when i brong it to my mothers house it just wont so im not usre what it is. I live in Oregon but are you talking about the number on the back of the power subbly if thats the case its set at 115 not 230. Well i also thought it might be my video card becasue about a month ago my dad traded our my 9600PRO for this 9100 but as i said it worked at my dads house half an hour before i brought it here and plugged it in and plus my moms computer at this house works fine plus we live in the same city like 5 minutes away oh and btw whats a PSU??? oh and another thing once i get my next check i should be upgradeing my whole compy to a 200G hardrive instead of a 20G lol a new 9800PRO all in wonder nice Chaintech mother board a AMD sempron 2600 1.6Gigahertz and a 1 gig of Corsair value ram so i was wondering when i upgrade it do you think this prbolem wil go away?Compy is about 2-3 years old

PSU is the computer Power Supply Unit... any floating voltage on any pin will get you in trouble.

It's also possible that your comp was "shaked" during the transport and something is no more properly connected rolleyes.gif

If you can, open it and remove/re-seat the videocard. At this point, it will not hurt to remove all cards and clean its pins/connectors with a white soft rubber. Also, check for dust and remove it by using a soft brush.

Be care not to use compressed air, as it may be some condensed water in the compressor that can harm the whole thing.

Ok

I never thought that it could be my power supply but now that i think about it i think that you may be right im preety sure nothing got unsteated because this has happened 2wice before see i go to my moms house every other weekend and we had a lan party a month or 2 ago and when i brought my computer form my moms to my dasds it worked but then i took it to my mos it didnt work so i brought it Back to my dads plugged it in and it worked this is the 2nd time its happend and in all in a huff about it btw do u know of any place where i can buy a psu tester cheap and how do i use it cuz ive never heard of one as ive never had this problem before oh yea and bwt is your thing at the bottom of your avatar Henry David Thoreau A.K.A "The man of Concord"? (Ralph Waldo Emerson)?? i tried reseating everything like u said and i got nothing i dont have any sof white rubber so i used a brush so i think now im going to get a new power supple or a tester to see whats going on but dont know wehre to get 1....oh yea i dont think it was the transport cuz other wise everythime i bring it to my dads house everything gets shaked back into place then i take it to moms it gets un shaked so i dont know.......

If it works when plugged on some houses/wall outlets and not on others, it's probably a local power distribution problem... but a PSU tester will be useful at any time biggrin.gif

Hi Jonathan,

Would you please list the components of your unit, the CPU and MHz, and especially how many watts does your Power Supply put out? I hate giving advice without knowing the basics of the system I am dealing with.

I notice that you write that this started after your LAN party. Did you have to make any system changes to link into the Network, or did the power "blink" while at the LAN party or did you have to install any special, proprietary software while at the party? Especially, did you make any hertz or resolution changes to your system while at the party. Try to think of exactly what you did at that party to setup your unit to play on the LAN.

Did you try to connect a different monitor to your system? Try connecting up your Dad's computer monitor (assuming he has a computer) or a friends and see what happens.

That power supply tester that Chris linked you to is very basic, but it will tell you if you are far below voltages on any of your rails, or if any one of them is dead or fluctuating. All you do is unplug the main power cable from the Power Supply to the mainboard (the one with the wide plug and all the wires), and plug it into the tester. Then turn it on. If all the lights on the tester come on green and steady (no blinkers!) then you are good.

Let us know what happens. smile.gif
