Hi,
Its my first time on your site Iam a novice re computing I hope I explain myself o kay. I have a Packard Bell computer 1 Media 5095 about 2 years old, I run windows XP with SP2, Ihave Norton Internet Security 2005 installed. Norton works fine but when I try and open Norton in safe mode, nothing happens it will not open any ideas, Clank mad.gif

When you run in safe mode not everything is loaded. Will it run when not in safe mode?
Ironbender
Just wondering why you are trying to run Norton in safe mode... rolleyes.gif

Safe mode is for debugging or emergency purposes only, and, as blackhawk said, not everything is loaded, just the minimum needed stuff to allow boot up.

Why run Norton in safe mode
I always run my AV in safe mode, many times a virus or trojan is listed as a process, once started it can't be removed unless in safe mode.. Norton even tells you to run in safe mode as seen here..

The following instructions pertain to all current and recent Symantec antivirus products, including the Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus product lines.

  1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
  2. Update the virus definitions.
  3. Restart the computer in Safe mode.
  4. Run a full system scan, and delete all files that are detected as Downloader.BO or Backdoor.Jeem.
  5. Delete the values that were added to the registry.

Okay, try this:
Boot to safe mode... <START/RUN> type "navw32 /L" (without the quotes).

Hi
Thanks for all the replies, yes it does appear to work correctly when not in safe, mode. Did as you asked and booted up in safe mode, clicked run and typed in navw32/L, and an error message came up, "Can not find navw32\L". When I rebooted in normal mode a bubble message came up for about 4 seconds and then disappeared saying " Your computer was a risk Norton security turned off," I checked this and it was all switched on and working correctly. It has done this before but not every time I boot up. Clank

Did you typed it correctly (without quotes and with a space between navw32 and /L) ?

This is the correct command line provided by symantec: navw32 /L

Note that some virus can prevent navw32 process to run. Better post a HijackThis log here, just to see if it's all really clean...

Hi again, thanks Ironbender. you have obviously dealt with computer buffs keybrd.gif like me before, sorry .you were correct I missed the space out, surprise, surprise sad.gif
Anyway did as you said and it worked thanks a million, did the scan all clear. Just for my own education, why didn't it open in safe mode until I typed navw32 \L,
I try very hard to learn about computers, but sometimes I dont read what is sent to me properly .Thank goodness there are sites and professionals with patients like you about, Thanks again, Clank smiley- thumb up.gif

Symantec reports that this will happen sometimes (and do not explain why), and sugest to type the command line if it does not work by the normal way.
