HI wavey.gif

When I updated to SP2, I get this new Shut Down Window now.

Is there a way to set it up so that 'Shut down' is highlighted instead of 'Install updates and shut down', so when I want to shut down, I can just click the 'OK' button, and not have to click the arrow to get to 'Shut down?? 'Install updates and shut down' is at the top, when I want to shut down.

Thanks a bunch,
Lorraine

Hi Lorraine,

Never seen this screen before... maybe the updates were not properly installed yet and this is why Windows is asking to do it ?
danzil
i have seen this screen a load of times.
unfortunatly i have not read nor do i know of a fix you need.
this screen means that you have your auto updates downloaded but not installed yet.
you usually see a yellow shield with a exclamation mark in it, this pops up and says something like "updates are ready to be installed". if you ever see that double clicked it and install the updates then when you shut down next that screen will not be there.

i hope that helps in any way.
danzil
sorry i forgot to put that the shield is in the bottom right hand side near your LAN, time area.
if you see the shield like i said and install the updates you may see another screen asking you to restart. (just a warning), you dont have to restart though, but you will get a nagging pop up occasuionally saying something like "you have not restarted since your last updates" or something along those lines.

hope it helps.

Sorry Chris, I didn't explain myself very well...I'm known for that. blushie.gif

No everything is fine, and working ok. I have a Gateway, and this is the screen I get when I want to shut down. (I know different makes of computers have different shut down windows, My daughter's does, I like hers the best, because everything is on buttons, and all you have to do is click one of the buttons.)

Mine, I have to use the arrow, but that was ok, because 'Shut down' was already hightlighted, and all I had to do was click on the 'OK' button, but when I updated SP2, it added the line 'Install updates and shut down' and that's what highlighted now. so now I have to use the arrow, and go to 'Shut down' then click OK.

It's not a big problem, it's just sometimes I forget when I shut down, and click OK, then find out I have to wait for the update if there are any, before the computer shuts down. sad.gif

Lorraine go to control panel click on user accounts then click on change the way you log off/on.Maybe that will help.

Well I'll be, That was it danzil. biggrin.gif Thanks, sorry I didn't see your post when I was posting.

I turned off Automatic updates, and when I went back, sure enough, 'Shut down' was highlighted. biggrin.gif

Now this brings up another problem, I have an update that wont update, that's why it was coming up all the time.

How can I get rid of this one. I have a HP printer, but I don't have any problems with it.

Thanks blackhawk, I'll check that out also. biggrin.gif

Hi blackhawk, I checked out, I see I have The 'classic logon prompt' and the 'Welcome screen' is what my daughter has, now that I remember.

I can't change it because a Client Services for NetWare had disabled it...I'm not sure what that means, and not sure if I wan't to disable Client Services for NetWare.

But it's not a problem though, if I disable the automatic updates.

Hi Lorraine, Im glad i was of some help. I dont advise that you turn off automatic updates though. These updates stop you from being infected from some of the nasties that are lurking on the internet. Also they update other issues in the operating system. It is best to turn it back on.
As for the update not installing, you can go on the Windows update site and there is an option for auto update to stop that update from downloading again. i am not 100% sure but it might be in the menu "revuiew your update history", i know there is this option because i have had that problem before.
yet again i hope that helps.
if you can not find it message back and i will have a look.
bye lorraine .

Sorry didnt see the other one, for the second issue try this
In control panel, click on network and internet connections. Then click on network cnnections. Right click on properties and select the network/internet connection you use. Check each one individually by right clicking and then clicking properties. When you see the client services on netware in the list of properties click on it to remove the small x. don't click anything else. Now scroll down and hit unnstall. Your PC will reboot with the old netware logon. After it does go back to control panel and click user accounts and change how people logon. Now you will be allowed to re-establih the welcome and fast switching tabs that netware disabled. Good luck

Hi danzil, Thanks again for your advice. biggrin.gif

I went to the internet connections, and found what you were saying. If I just had to uncheck the box, it wouldn't be so bad, but to delete that line is a little scary.

I had a lot of trouble setting my 98 computer up wireless, to this XP Pro. computer, and when I was in there, I had to do a lot of checking and unchecking to get the setup, and once we got the 98 computer all setup and working, I don't think I would want to delete anything in there. eeeeek.gif

The way it is now, it's not too bad, once I find out why the one download won't install, then it will be ok. I e-mailed MS, to see what I can do about the download, and how to get rid of it, so hopefully, I'll get a response soon.

I hope I'm not confusing you. blink.gif

Below is what I'm looking at.

i dont think it should do any harm just unticking it and checking, if there is any issues then you should just be able to untick it.

no you didnt confuse me, which is qiute scary because im easly confused lol.

If you are not using a Novell netware, just a Microsoft network, you do not need this service running rolleyes.gif
LF from MC
Before I delete it danzil, or Chris, what do you mean Novell netware? and how do I know if I use it or not?

Just asking biggrin.gif You probable no more of what I use then I do.

BTW, I did uncheck it and rebooted. Now I just have to delete it. Just waiting for your answer. biggrin.gif
Ironbender
No problem on deleting it Lorraine. Novell netware is another type of lan program, mostly used on corporate networks.

If you have no Novell network software installed, this service was set by error during your Microsoft network configuration. It's just a service that allows a Microsoft local network to talk with a Novell local network. biggrin.gif

If you unchecked it and your network is still working, you can safely remove it.

boing.gif It worked!! that's what I was looking for, * runs to see if the 98 computer is still connected, phew!!, yep still connected*

That was apiece of cake eeeeek.gif lol.gif

Thanks so much danzil, and Chris hug.gif

Now all I have to do is turn on the computer, and it comes right up to the desk top, and when I shut down, just click on one button smiley- yes.gif biggrin.gif

cheers.gif you two biggrin.gif
