ok, i've wanted to change my hub by Asante becuase it's old, big, heavy, and can only go 10Mbps. So recently my dad changed his switch that worked perfectly from SMC for a newer switch by Linksys, that has more ports that he can connect things too. So i replaced my old hub with the one i have been using so i could have faster speeds. So i replaced my old hub with the switch, making sure everything is wired correctly. Then when i turned on my computer and i got an error saying, "connection has limited or no connectivity", but it wasnt limited, i had absolutly no interent connection. So i tried everything i could think of, restarting my computer, reseting the swtich, switching the cabes, turning the swtich on and off, but nothing got it working. So i reconnected my old hub, and my interent worked fine again. So my dad thought that it something electronicly went wrong with the switch and just stopped working. Then like a couple of days ago my dad bought a new switch by Linksys that is a 5-port 10/100Mbps that supports both full and half duplex speeds. So we replaced my old hub with it thinking it should work perfectly fine, but to our suprise it didnt. It said the same error on my computer that the SMC switch got, "connection has limited or no connectivity", leaving me with absolutly no interent. However this time i tried a lot of things to fix it. I installed the patch for WXSP2, that solved this problem for many people, but it didnt for me. I tried some stuff with winsock, but no luck there either. I also tried changing the link speed and duplex values, but i got no luck there either. So just to make sure we were just really unlucky and got another defective switch, we connected it using a different cable that runs through the house thats in another room to my computer and to our suprise it worked perfectly on the new Linksys switch and even on the other SMC switch that we thought didnt work anymore. So im confused, because when you connect either the SMC switch or the Linksys switch all the indications that it should be working fine our there, the lights are all the colors they should be and what not. However when the the local area connection tries to get a connection and then give me that error, when i view the detials, i see a physical address, a submet mask, and an IP address. However the IP address is completely wrorng and doesnt have any information on the default gateway, DHCP server, Lease obtained, lease expires, and the DNS server. My dad, who is good with computers and networking because he is a computer science professor, thinks that its a problem with the cable and not the switches. The cables are straight, both ways, and dont seem to have anything loose or cut. However if there was a connection error within the cables, why does it work with my old Asante hub? So we're are both out of ideas and dont know what to do. We would greatly apprieciante any help that can be provided.
thanks.

Hi thisisme, welcome to SAF

As a first thought, I will suspect the cabling... crossover cables may not work properly on paralel cabled networks (and vice-versa). Also, a wrong wired cable may connect you but may causes the connection speed to drop below acceptable limits. If you have other computer on the same network that is connecting properly, try to use its cable on yours to see what happens.

Check if the color coded wires on both ends of your cable are exactly the same as on the others. Check this resourse on proper lan cable wirings: http://www.zytrax.com/tech/layer_1/cables/tech_lan.htm

hi chris,

first off thanks for replying.

Secondly, i dont believe the cables are crossover cables because we checked for that, but ill try that and seeing if the cable is wrongly wired.
I also have tried using a different cable on the same network from another computer to the switches and they worked fine. I also have tried using a laptop with the other my cable but i got the same error on that too, "connection has limited or no connectivity".
but ill try checking the colors on both ends of the cable to make sure they're the same too.
ill reply what i find.
if you or anyone else can think of anything else please do tell.
thanks.
