smile.gif Hi!!

Wondering if anyone can help me with this issue -

The following belong to a friend and I'm helping him out.

D-Link Wireless Router - IE is Cable (Rogers)

Laptop - (Geteway) P4 1.3 Mhz 256Mb

Desktop - (Dell) P4 2.40 MHz 256mb

Laptop lost Wireless connection somehow. (Build-in)
Connect straight to router - Connections works great - Except , this
pop-up " a network cable is unplugged " This appears every so often.
Strange thing, it doesn't lose any connection it just keeps poping-up.
How can I get rid of this ? My IE is working fine.

The same happens on the desktop. Both doing the same when connected straight to the router.

Any Idea ?

Does the laptop wireless need to be registered to the IP supplier -

In my device manager for the laptop - Here's what I see:

Network Adapters: (Friend says that he has a built in wireless) System can see one?

1394 Net Adapter
Broadcom 440x 10/100 intergrated controller
Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter

PCMCIA Adapters
PCMCIA and Flash memory devices.

Not sure what else I can troubleshoot. How can you tel if the laptop has a built in wireless card ?

Thanks in advance

Hello Mysons, a couple of questions.

Is your entire network cabled or wireless?

Has the whole setup worked before, or not? OR is only one part not working? OR has only one part failed that used to work?

If it has worked before, what did you do immediately before it started failing?

Do both of your computers have wireless NICs (Network Interface Cards) installed, or only cabled NICs (ones that you must screw a cat5 cable into)?

thanks...

This can be due to interferences on wireless signal.

Check if your NIC (advanced properties) power management settings are not set to sleep mode.

You can also uncheck the "notify when this connection is no longer available or limited" box on connection properties.

Thanks guys for your quick replies -

ranchhand - The laptop is the one concern - friend said it worked fine on Monday, today it stopped working, It does seem to find any Wireless router or lan. I even did a system restore back 3 days and see if it will make a difference. No change - Still no Wireless connection detected.

If I plug a cable straight to the router , it works fine but now and then you would see the little msg that says "a network cable is unplugged " for about half a second.

They claim it has a built-in wireless card, I see an empty slot on the side of the laptop where you insert a wireless card. How to tell if the Laptop has a built-in wireless ?

When I use the wireless wizard, set it all up accordingly - Click on refresh or re-list wireless network 0
The msg state that it could not find any Wireless router ...

Something is not right, I will bring my laptop and test it out with my wireless connection and see.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers ! thanks.gif

You can't always tell if a lap has a wireless card in it or not, without directly popping the cover and looking. Some of ours at the shop look as if there is one installed, but there isn't. If your friend's laptop was working on wireless network and then quit, obviously it must have a w/less NIC in it or it wouldn't have worked in the first place. So that means either the NIC died, or something got mis-configured.

When your friend plugged in a cable to his laptop, that would mean that: either he has only a cabled NIC, or he has a cabled AND w/less card installed. That would explain the phantom "card disconnected" message he occasionally gets.

You can try to go into Device Manager/Network Adapters and see how many NICs are listed there.

So I guess right now we aren't sure what he has in his lap. so if you can get that information we can take it from there.
