Hey everyone. I have a weird bug and I don't really know what it is, why it does what it does, or how to get rid of it. I guess the best way to describe it is to explain what it is doing. First of all, if I use a search engine (Google) and click on a result I get sent to a different search engine that shows me their results for what I typed in Google. If I hit "back" and click on the same result again I get sent to a different search engine that does the same thing. Also, since the bug has been doing this I haven't been able to get my AV updated. I have Norton Corporate Edition Gold and when I try and do a Liveupdate, it freezes at either the "Checking for Updates" or "Getting Information" stages. Any ideas....I'd appreciate it.

Hi A P...haven't seen you around for a while.

Remember HijackThis? You used it previously, if I remember correctly. There's a pinned link at the top of this forum to download it.
Ancient Pathways
Hey Ed, it has been a while. Thanks for the reminder about HijackThis!!. Here's the results

You have a few trojans showing, one of which is running:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hclean32.exe

It's a downloader/installer, so I hope ZoneAlarm is blocking it. Disconnect from the internet before you apply the following fix.

Open the task manager and end process on hclean32.exe.

Run HijackThis and fix these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?new-hkcu

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://yoursearch.ws/?id=197

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://yoursearch.ws/?id=197

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {82A90B66-F4A9-B7EB-4673-95C2A7D95141} - MSTCPDLL.dll (file missing)

Close any open windows except HijackThis and click on 'Fix checked'.

Boot to safe mode following either of the methods outlined here

Make all files and folders visible as per these instructions:

QUOTE
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Search for and delete these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hclean32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmgio.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\yaemu.exe

You may not find the last two, but look carefully anyway.

Boot to normal mode and post a fresh log. I suspect there may be more than meets the eye here, but a first pass like this usually makes the overall picture clearer.

Let us know how it goes.
Ancient Pathways
HK,
I did everything that you suggested...
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [yaemu.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\yaemu.exe was not listed by Hijack when I ran the fix, but it came back this time. Also this R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl.toolbar/ is new. I fixed them both after grabbing this log.

Hi AP...I suspected there's a hidden file loading the malware, so we'll try some other programs to detect it. One of the file names has changed.

Download SilentRunners to the desktop. It will take a couple of minutes to complete, even though the log will show from the beginning. Wait for it to finish and post the log.

Also, you have no antivirus software showing! I recommend you install the trial version of Ewido Security Suite. Check for updates after installation, then boot to safe mode and run it from there. Save the log it generates and post that as well.

HK,
I don't understand why there's no anti-virus running. I have Norton Corp. Edition Gold and it's in the task bar. Could this also tie into my problem updating it? Anyway, here are the logs you requested, I hope you find something that I can get rid of.

HKEd
AP...we're dealing with a rootkit trojan here. Rootkits can be pure evil. They can operate at kernel (core) level, effectively outside the operating system. I'm sure this one has disabled Norton's functionality. Rootkits can take out firewalls as well, but ZA appears to be intact.

This is the hidden file:

"mptsgsvc.exe" = "mptsgsvc.exe"

And it's probably loading these two:

"dmpip.exe" = "C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmpip.exe" [null data]
"hgqhp.exe" = "C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgqhp.exe" [null data]

We'll need to do the rest manually. If you have rebooted since posting those logs, post back with fresh SilentRunners and HijackThis logs. If you haven't rebooted, post a HijackThis log only.

Download Killbox to your desktop but don't use it for now. I need to make a REG file for you to use along with it. I'll wait to see the log(s) before we proceed.
Ancient Pathways
HK,
I have rebooted since I posted those logs and it's kind of late now. I'll run new logs and post them as early as possible tomorrow (or later today depending on how you look at it) and leave my system on until I hear from you...See ya then...
Ancient Pathways
Hey HK,
Here is the new Silent Runners log:

I'll be on for the rest of the night and won't re-boot. My e-mail is checked evry half hour so I'll know when you've posted a response. Thanks for all the help...
HKEd
This 12-hour time diference doesn't make things easy, AP. rolleyes.gif

Things are looking better. The SilentRunners log does not show the hidden trojan, and the one that's left is visible in the HJT log. We'll use a hammer on it this time. icon_smile_mischievous[1].gif

Fix this line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hgqhp.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgqhp.exe

Click on 'Fix checked' and close HJT.

Open Killbox and click on 'Delete on Reboot'.

Copy/paste this to the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgqhp.exe

Click on the red circle with the white X and OK the prompt to reboot.

Post back with fresh HJT and SR logs.
Ancient Pathways
Alrighty Ed,
Did what you said, btw I love Killbox, anyway below are the scans:

Just this one to fix (I missed it!):

O2 - BHO: ActiveX Control - {6B019C6B-25E9-4972-AFA9-677DC1F798DE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msrrr.dll (file missing)

I wonder what happened to the other two files. blink.gif

I don't know if it was malware or a security program that changed this setting:

If it turns out to be a problem, it's just a matter of editing the registry to change the value from 1 to 0. Open Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right-hand pane of the Explorer 'folder', double-click on NoBandCustomize and change the Value Data to 0 (zero).
Ancient Pathways
Good to here that I'm clean, I ran the fix that you pointed out. Should I post another log or are you sick of staring at all those lines blink.gif . As for that registry change you mentioned...how will I know if it will be, or is being, a problem?
HKEd
No need for any more logs, AP. All looks good now. That 02 I missed will go without fuss.

The only answer I have to that is in the SR log:

You probably won't even notice it. It's an easy enough registry edit. I can talk you through it if you like.

WARNING! "NoBandCustomize"=dword:00000001

I'm guessing here but is this the part where I change the 1 to a Zero? If so I think your instructions on the previous post will be sufficient.
HKEd
Never guess with the registry! biggrin.gif

Yep...that's the one. In the Value Data box you'll see a 1. Just change it to 0 and close Regedit.
Ancient Pathways
HK,
The Regedit went smooth and all seems well(er). Thanks a heap for the help. Nice to see you too, I haven't been around in a while, but its nice to see familiar usernames when I poke my head in for help. Thanks again. cheers.gif
HKEd
You're welcome, AP.

When it comes to problems with malware, we're happier if we don't see you that often. biggrin.gif
Ancient Pathways
Hey HK,
Everything seems to be running fine now except my Anti-V is still locking up when I try to get updates. I haven't been able to get any updates for a good month and a half or so. Any ideas?
HKEd
Hard to know what could be causing that given we've nuked the malware, AP. I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling Norton just in case the malware corrupted a file or two.
Ancient Pathways
Uhhh....reinstalling Norton is gonna be kinda tough. I seem to have misplaced the disks. I did go to the Symantec website and manually downloaded and installed the newest virus definitions. I am thinking about just turning Norton completely off and using Anti-Vir. Opinion?

As for the bug it seems to be recurring. My roommate was complaining of doing some surfing and being redirected to porn sites. Should I do another log?
HKEd
I haven't used AntiVir, but it has a reputation as being a good freebie. It's certainly a lot leaner than Norton in terms of size and resources needed.

Sure, post HJT and SilentRunners logs and we'll see whassup.
Ancient Pathways
Quick note: Since I manually downloaded virus definitions Norton realtime scan is catching things as well as Ewido, but they are catching different files or files with different names.
