good day to all. hi to Hked(the good fellow that heped the last time I was highjacked) I have picked up something from msn messenger and am not sure what it is, so I'm turning to the experts to try and solve this. what ever hit me reminds me of coolweb because it deleted a file in zonealarm(so it won't run) and won't let me access highjackthis or allow me to connect to the internet antivirus websites. all of my windows patches are up to date here is my hijackthis log:

the 2 F3 enteries are new and entered without my knowledge. i recieved a messeage from a friend on msn messenger stating "check this out" with a link provided that I went to but did not download the app. because I won't download an app. from an unknown source. thanks in advance I hope we can find a solution. btw i had to do this in safe mode so that is the reason for alot of the processes not running

Hi aws...any changes you try to make will not happen because SpyBot's TeaTimer is enabled. This protects many registry changes, so it has to be disabled first. Follow the directions here.

After disabling TeaTimer, reboot to safe mode again.

Make all files and folders visible as per these instructions:

Locate the izjqkpoj folder in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete it. Reboot to normal mode and see if you can run a HJT scan there. Post the new log.

You may have to uninstall ZoneAlarm and reinstall it, but let's see what the new log shows.

the first 3 I was able to fix with hijackThis, but O4 - Startup: csrss.lnk = ? created an alert message

btw I am able to disable 04 - Startup: csrss.lnk = ? in spybot s&d and would that help. thanks again for your time and trouble

Hi aws...that log looks clean now.

The csrss.lnk = ? shows there's a call in the registry for the file, but it's likely not there. No need to report it to Merijn. HJT has always had some problems with those Global Startups. Let Spybot fix it if it can. If not, there may be a link you can delete. Click on Start > All Programs > Startup and delete from there if found.

Nothing to worry about.

BTW, it looks like ZoneAlarm is functional again. Did you reinstall it?

hi hked I tried to get rid of the csrss.lnk = ? with hijackthis but the same error message keeps coming up. I ran a spybot s&d scan and it showed 5 variations of coolwebsearch. I am not too worried about the "csrss.lnk = ?" as I can disable it in spybot s&d tools startup and will be formatting my harddrive in the near future. Yes I did reinstall zonealarm because the virus deleted the vsmon.exe file. It was a smart little virus it first took down zonealarm then it stopped internet access to any antivirus updates or patches. then I couldn't access HijackThis to do a scan. I would also not allow access to windows update or any msn sites. Enough drivel thanks once again for your insight and help. till we talk again aws

If remnants of CoolWebSearch were found, it would be no harm to run this dedicated tool:

CWShredder

Click on 'Scan Only'. If anything is found, run it again and click on 'Fix'. You can then just delete the program.
