Microsoft Word on my computer has developed a problem. Whenever I try to save a document from my hard drive, it crashes. It also crashes when I try printing a document. Oddly, though, I can save a document to a USB memory stick with no problems. However, it still crashes when I try to print a document that is on the memory stick. I can take the same files that can't be saved or printed on my computer, transfer them to another computer, & they work fine. Powerpoint & Excel are also installed, but they have no problems saving or printing.
Here is what I have tried to fix it:
Freeing up space on my hard drive (9 Gb are available on the Word partition, 370 Mb are available on a separate & unneccesary partition)
Turning off virusScan
Emptying the recycling bin
Repairing Word w/ the original disk
Reinstalling Word
Restarting the computer

Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas?

Hi fab, welcome to SAF

This is a tricky issue... just as a thought, try deleting all your temporary files in c:\windows\temp and eventually in c:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Temp. (first, configure Explorer to display hidden files and extensions of known file types (Tools/Folder Options)
Perform a search for files which matches the string "~$*.do?" and delete them.
Reboot.

Post back to let us know if it worked.

Hello Chris, thanx for the welcome.

I deleted all temp files, but no effect.

A search for the string "~$*.do?" found nothing. I searched for "*.dot" and found 4 docs: email.dot & 3 versions of PDFMaker.dot. Should I delete any of them? I have heard that normal.dot can be a problem, but I didn't find any such document.

Thx for your advice,
Fab
Ironbender
No. Do not delete any of them, only the files beginning with "~$"

normal.dot is a document default settings file and may not be a problem...

I will scout around and think a bit more about your problem, but it's a very strange issue for me. Are you sure you have no malware running that can affect only MS Word ? biggrin.gif
fab
I don't know what malware is or how to find it. Is it similar to spyware?
Ironbender
Yes, but spyware only spies you, malware tends to harm your computer sometimes rolleyes.gif

1 - Download and run updated versions of AdAware SE and Spybot S&D, one at a time and clean all you can.
AdAware - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

2 - Perform a housecall online virus check from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

3 - Run HijackThis and post the log here. See http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?act=S...ST&f=15&t=16053 on how to do that.

Hi fab,

Looks like a clean log to me, but I am not a specialist on this, so you'll need to wait for someone more skilled advice.

Chris

Try running a Repair from the Office installation disc. Something may have gotten a bit corrupted.
HKEd
Hi fab...Chris asked me to check your log and it's clean, so malware is not an issue here.
Ironbender
OK fab, no malware issues. At this point I would try Jim's suggestion, as there is no much solutions left...

Ok,
first I noticed that when the error reporting screen showed up, there was a link to microsoft, where they did a "crash analysis" & recommended 5 updates. I installed them all, but the crashing still happens, & the link in the error reporting box has since disappeared. Then I repaired office from the original cd, & it said it repaired successfully, but it's still crashing.

Here is the error signature:
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 10.0.6764.0 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 37001160

Thx for all your help. Any more ideas?
Ironbender
Hi fab,

still searching on your problem... have found so many similar issues, but only when Word and Works are together or Word was installed from a Works package.

will search more and let you know if I find something.

Chris

A few things come to mind.

First - Not sure how likely it is, but Word could be accessing a memory range that is damaged. Run Memtest - see the link below in my signature.

Second - A repair install may have left damaged files that is causing the problem. I would uninstall it completely (from the registry as well using Regcleaner.) Be carefull using regcleaner, dont want to cause any more issues!

Third - It may be a conflict with another program. I see you shut down stuff like the AV, but if the above two possibilities dont pan out, it could be a conflict with something else on your system. You may want to use "selective startup" and disable all unnecessary programs. Then if Word works, reenable them one at a time until Word stops working.
fab
Using the 3rd option, I was able to find the guilty system service - Network Associates McShield. However, keeping it turned off means that VirusScan won't work. I repaired the installation, but no effect. Should I find another virus program to use?
Ironbender
Hi fab
I do not know how Network Associates McShield works, but it might have some config options to avoid that rolleyes.gif

If you want a new antivirus, please take a look at this pinned security analysis on antivitrus, by Interceptor:
http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?act=S...ST&f=16&t=16990

After that, you'll have some good background on what to choose biggrin.gif

Chris

Ok, after reading the review I uninstalled McAfee Antivirus & installed another antivirus program.

rolleyes.gif Word works now!sing.gif

Thank you all so much for helping me out w/ this problem. wavey.gif

Thanks for the feedback, fab. I am glad you get it sorted out biggrin.gif
